Marsha Evans, American Red Cross president and retired rear admiral, is Marshall speaker

Marsha Evans, president of the American Red Cross, a post held by Gen. George C. Marshall from 1949 to 1950, will be the 14th annual Gen. George C. Marshall lecturer at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 7, in the Hudson’s Bay High School auditorium.

Evans, the first women to become an admiral in the Navy, at one time held the post of director of the George C. Marshall European Center for Security studies in Garmisch, Germany.

After 29 years of service in the Navy, Evans became president of the Girl Scouts of America before becoming president of the Red Cross.

Former Marshall lecturers include secretary of state Colin Powell, former secretary of state Madeleine Albright, and NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw.

The Marshall lecture, sponsored by the Vancouver National Historic Reserve Trust’s Celebrate Freedom program and the City of Vancouver, is a free, but ticketed, event. Of 5,000 seats available, 2,500 will be reserved for students. Reservations for tickets by the general public can be made through Wednesday, Oct. 29. For further information, call 992-1800.

Performing arts steering committee
looking for subcommittee members

The Center for the Arts Steering Committee is seeking members for subcommittees as the organization gets ready to acquire feasibility information for a permanent arts venue in Clark County, reports committee co-chair Blaine Nisson.

The committee is the result of a project initiated by the 2003 class of Leadership Clark County. Envisioned is a performing arts center large enough to house a 1,200- to 1,500-seat theater, a smaller 500-to-600 seat theater, and a ‘black box’ theater with a capacity for about 200 seats. The building would also have a lobby large enough to serve as an art gallery.

Clark College, a possible location for a community center, is conducting a feasibility study. The steering committee will also oversee a feasibility study.

According to Nisson, the studies are required to more accurately gauge community needs. Nisson says no local taxes are envisioned. “We hope to be able to develop the center with grants and private foundation support,” Nisson says.

Co-chair of the committee is retired state representative Val Ogden. The subcommittees for which members are being sought are resource development, chaired by Steven Turner, research, chaired by Gus Norwood, public relations, and site visits.

For further information, call Nisson at 992-2000.

Swap thermometers, toss computers

Thermometers may be brought to room 2, in the Health and Education Center from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10.

Clark College will be accepting television sets, computers, monitors and related gear all day Friday, Oct. 10, in the parking lot in the 1900 block on Fort Vancouver Way.

For further information on hazardous waste disposal, call 397-6118, extension 4352.
