County population growth still climbing

Clark County population has grown by about 10,000 persons since January, according to new electrical hook ups recorded by Clark Public Utilities.

While growth was under 2 percent for most of the year, the annual rate of growth of residential customers increased to 2.58 percent at the end of October.

So far this year, the utility has signed up 3,232 new residential households—1,216 in September and October alone.

Port communicators earn awards

The Portland Metro chapter of the Public Relations Society of America and the Oregon Columbia International Association of Business Communicators gave the Port of Vancouver Communications Department a Spotlight Award and Award of Merit respectively for the port communication program highlighting the port’s 90th anniversary in 2002.

Two events commemorating the anniversary. the Seafarers International Festival attached its largest crowd ever, 5,000 people, and the Symphony at the Waterfront attracted 3,000.

“Make a family tradition of giving blood on Thanksgiving Day”—American Red Cross

The 9th annual American Red Cross Thanksgiving Day blood drive in Portland is from 7 a.m. to noon in the Red Cross Portland Donor Center, 3131 N Vancouver Avenue.

“Make giving blood tomorrow a family tradition,” says Shawna Burkholder, spokesperson for the Clark County Chapter.

“If you can’t donate on Thanksgiving Day, the Clark County Chapter has two blood Drawings, Friday, Nov. 28,” Burkholder says. They are 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Clark County Blood Center, 6300 NE St. James Road, and 1 to 6 p.m. in the Mill Plain United Methodist Church, 15804 Mill Plain Boulevard.

spots is free Thursday and Friday

Parking if free at all metered locations in the City of Vancouver Thanksgiving Day and Friday

City offices will be closed both days as will Clark County offices, and schools and colleges in the county.

The Daily Insider will not be published Thursday or Friday. Most other businesses will be open as usual Friday.

Festival of Nativities on view next week

The third annual Festival of Nativities exhibit presented by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is open from 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, through Saturday, Dec. 6, in the church at 10509 SE 5th Street.

Admission to the exhibit, consisting of over 400 nativities from around the world, is free.

Vancouver Mall shoppers to get traffic help

Beginning Friday, Nov. 28, and during peak traffic hours on expected heavy shopping days, Vancouver police will be directing traffic at strategic intersections at the Vancouver Mall.

The most serious shopping days are Nov. 28 and 29, and Dec. 13, 20, 21, 23, 24 and 26.

Hispanic Metropolitan Chamber dinner
to support Latino college scholarships

The Hispanic Metropolitan Chamber’s 9th annual casino night and buffet dinner in support of Latino college scholarships is at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, in the Marriott Hotel, 1401 SW Naito Parkway, Portland.

Tickets are $50 each for members of the Hispanic Chamber, $60 for nonmembers. Call (503) 222-0280 for reservations.

Festival of Trees opens Friday morning

Public viewing of Festival of Trees decorated trees and wreaths, presented by the Vancouver Rotary Foundation begins at 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 28, in the Red Lion Hotel at the Quay. Viewing continues through Sunday, Nov. 30. General admission is $3.

The Vancouver community Christmas tree in the community square at Esther Short Park will be lighted during a ceremony that begins at 6 p.m.

Port of Ridgefield commissioners meet in regular session at 6 p.m. today in port offices at 111 W Division Street. Under consideration is the port’s 2004 budgets. --- The Clark County Public Facilities board meets at 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, in the Public Service Center. The board will discuss both the Vancouver hotel-conference center and the Clark County Fairgrounds projects.
