East wind blasts through Clark County, closing Fort Vancouver High School

A roaring east wind blew through the Pacific Northwest today, causing some school closures due to loss of electrical power. Fort Vancouver High School was closed at noon.

Gusts of 35 miles an hour were not unusual, and one gust in Clark County reportedly reached 80 miles an hour.

This storm will move through today, leaving rain in its wake, but meteorologists say a second, similar storm may follow.

Clark Public Utilities’ spokesperson Mick Shutt said wind-related outages affected as many as 6,000 customers, mostly in outlying areas. By early afternoon fewer than 1,500 were without power.

Christmas Ships to begin Columbia River parading Sunday from Camas-Washougal

In its 49th year, the annual Portland Christmas Ships Inc. Christmas Parade’s first night on the Columbia River  begins at 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, from the Camas-Washougal port area proceeds west to the I-5 bridge area and returns on the Washington side of the river.

The Columbia River fleet, about half of the total fleet of 60 boats (the other half parades along the Willamette River ) parades on the Columbia River, most often departing Salty’s Restaurant at 7:30 p.m. each evening.

The Columbia River Schedule is as follows:

Monday, Dec. 8, I-5 Bridge area, Columbia Shores Complex, Hayden Bay.

Tuesday, Dec. 9, North Portland Harbor.

Wednesday, Dec. 10, I-205 Bridge to Steamboat Landing, parading along the Washington side of the river.

Thursday, Dec. 11, I-5 Bridge area, Columbia Shores Complex, Hayden Bay.

Monday, Dec. 15, I-5 Bridge area, Columbia Shores Complex, Hayden Bay.

Tuesday, Dec. 16, I-205 Bridge area to Steamboat Landing and return on the Washington side of the river.

Wednesday, Dec. 17, North Portland Harbor.

Thursday, Dec. 18, I-5 Bridge area, Columbia Shores Complex, Hayden Bay.

Friday Dec. 19, 42nd Street boat ramp area, including the Washington side of the river and the I-5 Bridge area.

Gardner School, county’s only independent school, holding open house Saturday

The Gardner School, 16413 NE 50th Avenue, just north of Washington State University Vancouver, is holding an open house from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 6, to introduce potential students’ parents to the concepts of multiple learning paths for youngsters.

According to the head of the school, Jari Graves-Highsmith, children learn in many different ways according to their own ways of receiving information.

The school is not affiliated with any religious group or any other organization, according to Graves-Highsmith. The school has about 100 students ranging from three years old to 8th graders.

Some financial aid is available, according to Graves-Highsmith. For further information, call 574-5752.

Messiah opens Bravo! Vancouver season

Bravo! Vancouver opens its tenth season with its traditional Handel’s Messiah in a 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, concert in St. Joseph Church, 400 Andresen Road.

The Bravo! Vancouver chorale is conducted by Maria Manso. Tickets will be on sale at the door.

Brian Fleetwood has been named vice president commercial loan officer at Columbia Credit Union, reports Chuck Anderson, the credit union’s senior vice president of business banking. Most recently, Fleetwood was a vice president commercial loan officer with First Independent Bank. Raised in Clark County, Fleetwood is a graduate of Washington State University.
