Healthcare scholars sharing $100,000
from medical center foundation

The Southwest Washington Medical Center Foundation has announced $100,000 in scholarships this year for local scholars pursuing healthcare studies.

The Sarina Slaid Scholarship for $3,200 went to Ashley Spencer-Robinson, a recent graduate of Hudson’s Bay High School. Spencer-Robinson, a volunteer at the medical center’s Family Birth Center, will attend Arizona State University next fall.

Suzie Burmeister earned the $2,500 Margaret Heins Scholarship. She is a student at Clark College and plans to transfer to Washington State University to work toward a bachelors degree.

Mollie Zhang, a national honor role student at Mountain View High School, was awarded the Junior Volunteer Scholarship of $2,000. She plans to attend the University of Washington to pursue a pharmacy career.

Of 77 scholarships presented, 24 went to Southwest Washington Medical Center employees.

National anthem singers
for county fair sought

Auditions for prospective national anthem singers for the August Clark County Fair will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 21, in the Clark County Exhibition Hall on the fairgrounds.

Both individuals and groups may try out for the 14 slots for the national anthem during the ten-day fair that runs August 5 through 14.

Auditioners will be asked to sing the first stanza of the “Star-Spangled Banner” without music.

Last year, 97 individuals and groups tried out. The performances will precede the opening of daily shows at the Columbian Concert Stage.

Fairgrounds Neighborhood
Association wins national award

For having put together a reception for 1,000 public safety personnel from 13 western states, and with only 48 hours’ advance planning, the Fairgrounds Neighborhood Association was awarded second place in competition with neighborhood associations across the nation by Neighborhoods USA.

Working with neighborhood volunteers and local businesses, the Fairgrounds Neighborhood Association organized a reception for participating law enforcement officials in an August memorial procession for Clark County deputy sheriff Brad Crawford, who had died in the line of duty earlier last summer.

A reception area was set up near the county sheriff’s office West Precinct, where, according to neighborhood association president Bridget Schwarz, “We fed breakfast to the early arrivals, lunch to everybody, and sent them on their way with drinks and snacks.”
