Earth is being moved by prime contractor Kiewit Pacific at the site of the Confluence Project’s major salute to the Lewis and Clark Expedition, the Maya Lin land bridge connecting Fort Vancouver with the Columbia River waterfront. If all goes well, the bridge and trail will be completed a year from now, according to Confluence Project spokesperson Bob Balaski. The $12.25 million project conceived by Lin, the architect and designer of the Vietnam Veterans Wall in Washington, D.C., was engineered by Seattle architect Johnpaul Jones. Work currently underway is preparatory to pouring foundations for the structure that will soar across Highway 14. The quarter-mile trail and bridge connects the Old Apple Tree Park, just south of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe right-of-way and the Vancouver National Historic Site near E 5th Street just north of the Fort Vancouver stockade. The 40-foot-wide concrete bridge will be landscaped and will have observation points. The walkway, which will be 12 feet wide, will accommodate pedestrians and bicyclists. Steve Morasch appointed to
Steve C. Morasch, Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt attorney, has been appointed to the Clark County Planning Commission. Morasch succeeds Lonnie Moss, who recently resigned from the seven-member planning organization. Morasch, whose term continues through 2010, is a member of the Industrial Lands Committee of the Columbia River Economic Development Council and, also, is a member of the board of the Clark College Alumni Association. Morasch is a graduate of Willamette University and the Lewis & Clark College law school. Other planning commission members are Milada Allen, Ron Barca, Dick Deleissegues, Jada Rupley, George Vartanian and Jeff Wriston. MacKay and Sposito
Derrick Smith has been promoted to a partner in the Vancouver-headquartered engineering, surveying and planning firm MacKay & Sposito. He is in the firm’s Tri-City branch. Smith, a graduate of Brigham Young University, holds a masters in business administration degree from the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University. Smith is a professional engineer in Washington, Oregon, California, and Idaho and is a certified project management professional. Peter Kowatsch, who joined MacKay & Sposito in 2002, has been promoted to an associate. Kowatsch manages land surveying services in the Tri-Cities branch. He holds professional land surveyor licenses in Washington and Oregon. Lisa Hunter Schauer, also promoted to associate, manages the MacKay & Sposito’s business development and marketing functions for the corporate and branch offices. She joined the firm in 2000. A graduate of Gonzaga University, Hunter Schauer previously worked for the Secretary of The Interior and as governmental affairs director for the Building Industry Association of Southwest Washington. Hunter Schauer is a past president the board of directors of Southwest Washington Independent Forward Thrust. Calendar A demolition derby is the
headline entertainment at the Clark County Fair at 7:30 p.m. this
evening. Pro Arena and Tuff Trucks
will be shown at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12. The
county fair winds up its ten-day run Sunday, Aug. 13. The final show

Vancouver Youth Theatre at 11 a.m. Saturday, in the Clark County
