Ample flu vaccine available locally There is an ample supply of flue vaccine available in Clark County, according to county health officer Alan Melnick. Melnick recommends flu immunization for everyone over 50 and anyone with chronic health conditions, as well as those who work around people who have health problems. Individuals should contact their health care providers or pharmacies about receiving a flu shot, Melnick says. People can also contact Clark County Public Health at 397-8089. Children’s vaccine is expected to be available by mid-October. According to Melnick, 35,000 people die annually from the affects of influenza. Esther Short Commons The Vancouver Housing Authority’s mixed-use Esther Short Commons west of Esther Short Park, already winner three of awards of excellence, has been selected to receive two national awards for excellence from the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials later this month.
The objectives of the project, according to Ron Kawamoto, vice chair of the VHA board, were to contribute significantly to downtown redevelopment, provide affordable and low-income housing in the downtown core, stimulate development and the economy in west Vancouver, and provide a home and year-round, seven-day-a-week indoor facility for the Vancouver Farmers Market. Esther Short Commons provides 160 affordable residential units. The awards are for Community Revitalization and for Project Design. The Community Revitalization Award cites the project’s positive impact on the Esther Short Park neighborhood. The Project Design Award cites the project’s design distinction, relationship to surrounding environment, innovation, and effective cost management and financing. Kawamoto and VHA commissioners Eric Hovee, Ceci Ryan Smith and Christopher Pazen will accept the awards at the NAHRO national conference in Atlanta on October 17. Vancouver Symphony opens
