Clifford R. Cook named
Vancouver’s police chief

Clifford R. Cook, deputy chief of police for the Fort Worth Police Department, today was selected by Vancouver city manager Pat McDonnell to head the Vancouver Police Department.

Cook succeeds Brian Martinek, who resigned last year in order to move to Portland to make it easier for his children to attend Portland parochial schools.

Vancouver acing chief Mitch Barker, who was a candidate for the top position on the department, will remain as assistant chief, McDonnell said.

Cook will be paid $127,464. He will begin the new job on April 2.

Jean Maunder named March
of Dimes nurse of the year

Jean Maunder, a registered nurse and certified nurse midwife in the Holtzman Twins Special Care Nursery and Family Birth Center at Southwest Washington Medical Center, has been named 2006 Nurse of the Year for Western Washington by the March of Dimes.

Maunder was recognized for her work in the perinatal-pediatric category, which honors a nurse whose influence and service in the care of pregnant mothers and babies exemplifies the mission of the March of Dimes.

Barbara James, clinical manager of the SWMC birth center and nursery, said, "Jean has touched so many lives in this community with her dedication to helping mothers have healthy pregnancies and healthy babies. She is a mentor to our staff, and a wonderful calm and soothing presence for our patients and families."

The March of Dimes award was established in 2003.

Tuesday and Wednesday customers
to be stuck with two weeks of garbage

Residential garbage, recycling and yard debris collections in the City of Vancouver and most of Clark County has been canceled for today. Collections are expected to resume as usual for regular Thursday and Friday customers.

Tuesday and Wednesday customers, whose collections were canceled due to inclement weather, should set out their garbage, recycling and yard debris on their regular time next week.

Vancouver Symphony concerts
feature pianist Yukiko Akagi

Pianist Yukiko Akagi performs Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A Minor as the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra opens the second half of its season this weekend in the concert hall at Skyview High School, 1300 NE 139th Street.

The program also includes Finlandia by Sibelius. The concerts are conducted by Vancouver Symphony Orchestra artistic director Salvador Brotons.

Each concert is preceded an hour before by an “Opening Notes” presentation by Travis Hatton, conductor and music director of the Vancouver Children’s Opera.

Performances are at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, and 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21. Ticket prices are $35 for reserved seating, $25 for general admission, $20 for seniors and $5 for students. The concerts are sponsored by Pacific Lifestyle Homes.

Hot ‘N’ Throbbing, a play for mature audiences,
opens Thursday in the Main Street Theatre

Arts Equity Onstage presents Hot ‘N’ Throbbing, a play for mature audiences, beginning with a champagne opening, Friday, Jan. 19. The play is written by Paula Vogel, who won a Pulitzer Prize for her play How I Learned to Drive, and is directed by Vancouver’s Llewellyn Rhoe.

The show repeats Saturday, Jan. 20. Curtain time in the Main Street Theatre, 606 Main Street, is 7:30 p.m. Tickets range from $8 to $24. For further information, call 695-3770.

Applications for two positions open on the Vancouver Salary Review Committee are being accepted through Wednesday, Feb. 14. Applicants must be residents of the city and registered voters. The Salary Review Committee meets every two years and makes recommendations for salaries to be paid to the mayor and city council members. For further information, call 696-8181.
