Women of Achievement named;
Eight Clark County women were designated 2007 Women of Achievement today by Clark College and YWCA Clark County, sponsors of the 23rd annual awards program. In addition, Fort Vancouver High School student Nicole Schriock was named 2007 Young Woman of Achievement. The selections are based on courage, determination and steadfastness. The honorees are as follows: Sister Joelle Aflaque, pastoral assistant for outreach at St. Joseph Catholic Church, who developed a special liturgy for Asian Pacific Islanders that was presented in the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception at the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.; Val Alexander, La Center farm owner and founding member of Friends of Clark County; Mari Greves, three-term president of the Vancouver School Board; Randi Holland, a tutor and mentor in reading and math, who served as a member of the Vancouver School Board for 17 years; Joy Overstreet, creator of Thin Within Seminars and 2006 Leadership Clark County graduate; Leilani Russell, multicultural coordinator for the Evergreen School District and 2005 winner of the Val Joshua Racial Justice Award; Kathi Wiley Gladson, a fitness expert, for the past six years a volunteer, sponsor and mentor for the I Have A Dream program in southwest Washington; and Judy Zimmerman, former co-publisher of the Camas Post Record, for 21 years a member of the board of the American Center for Oriental Research, and a former exchange director for Columbia-Cascade Friendship Force. Schriock will be presented a $1,000 Donna Roberge Scholarship. She is the senior class vice president at Fort Vancouver High School. Runners-up for the Young Women of Achievement Award were as follows: Ashli-Marie Grant, Vancouver School of Arts and Academics; Kayla Griffin, Fort Vancouver High School; Menglu Michelle Jiang, and Jane Lee, both of Mountain View High School; Jessica Stavig, Hockinson High School; Amy Tedder, Battle Ground High School; and Andrea Trujillo, Columbia River High School. The awards will be presented at an 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 6, luncheon in the Hilton Vancouver Washington. KGW-TV newswoman Laural Porter will be mistress of ceremonies. Tickets are $35 for adults, $30 for seniors and students. For reservations, call 906-4310. Steve Stuart to deliver Steve Stuart, chairman of the board of Clark County commissioners, will deliver the annual State of the County address Friday, Feb. 16, in the Exhibition Hall at the Clark County Fairgrounds, 17402 NE Delfel Road. Refreshments will be served at 3 p.m. The program begins at 3:45 p.m. with presentations of awards, followed by Stuart’s speech. The about to open Save-A-Lot grocery store in the Totem Pole Shopping Center in Hazel Dell, is holding a preview party from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31. Visitors will be shown what the store has to offer, sample food, listen to live music by the Swingline Cubs, but will not be allowed to shop. Visitors will also receive a Save-A-Lot logo canvas tote bag. Save-A-Lot will donate $5 on behalf of each person who previews the store to Loaves & Fishes, the Wheels-on-Wheels people. The store officially opens at 8 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 1. News briefs Charlie Kleier, executive vice president and partner of Norris, Beggs & Simpson Companies, has been recognized as one of the commercial real estate firm’s top five producers for 2006. Kleier specializes in multi-family and commercial investment sales in southwest Washington. His 2006 sales included a $7.3 million Vancouver Business Park transaction, a $5.26 million Bagley Estates multi-family project sale, and the $4.75 million Mt. View Ice Arena transaction. n State Sen. Don Benton (R-17th) has been appointed to the Senate Facilities and Operations Committee. Benton is the only member of the seven-member committee who is not an elected senate officer.
