Joe Zarelli endorses Battle Ground school measure State Sen. Joe Zarelli (R-18th), who considers himself a fiscally conservative Republican, has endorsed the Battle Ground School District’s three-year $38,310,000 school levy. Zarelli joins Battle Ground Mayor John Idsigna in support of the levy, which is on the Tuesday, Feb. 6, special election ballots. Ballots in the all-mail election have been sent to voters. Zarelli says, “As a community, we have a responsibility to provide our children with a quality education. The revenue from this levy will assure that the most basic needs are covered.” Other endorsements include those from the Washington Education Association, Battle Ground Education Association, Building Industry Association of Clark County, Clark County Association of Realtors, as well as a number of commercial and residential contractors. Historical museum celebrates
Darrell Millner, professor of African-American Literature and History in the Black Studies Department at Portland State University, will discuss, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, "Testing the Need for Black History," at the first of a series of First Thursday Museum After Hours lectures in the Clark County Historical Museum, 1511 Main Street. There is no charge for the museum’s First Thursday events. Millner is an expert on the history of African-Americans in the western movement, with a special focus on the Oregon and California Trail experiences. Millner earned a doctorate in education from the University of Oregon. He sits on the editorial board of the Oregon Historical Society. Tax foreclosure sale is Friday Four pieces of property are expected to be sold during the tax foreclosure sale at 9 a.m. Friday, Feb. 2, in the 6th floor hearing room in the Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin Street, reports county treasurer Doug Lasher. Cash, cashier’s check or a money order is required at the time of purchase, according to Lasher, who adds that registration is also required to make a bid. Pre-registration is being conducted between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. this week in the Treasurer’s Office on the second floor of the Public Service Center. services Gene Bulakites has been appointed food services manager for Lifeline Connections. Lifeline Connections is a Clark County-financed alcohol and drug assessment center providing intensive outpatient services. Lifeline Connections also provides inpatient services at Hotel Hope in the county Health Center. Lifeline Connections prepares about 400 meals a day, in addition to providing food service for Hotel Hope. Bulakites previously was with Simpson University, Redding, Calif., where he was responsible for preparing 1,500 meals a day. Bulakites was a member of the 1988 Culinary Olympic Team in New York. Drivers sought, no The Vancouver-Clark Parks & Recreation is seeking volunteers to drive 15-passenger vans for the department’s 50 Plus Travel Program. Drivers need not be conversant about attractions or events. Each driver is accompanied by an escort-guide, according to spokeswoman Lisa Deane. Day trips are all within a 125 mile radius of Vancouver. A commercial driver’s license is not required, but drivers must pass a criminal history check and be available to drive three or four days a month, Deane says.
