Deena Bisig named Phi Theta
Kappa
Deena Bisig, Clark College communications studies instructor, was selected as one of 24 people nationally who were Faculty Scholars for the 2007 Phi Theta Kappa Faculty Scholar Conference in February and will go on to become a member of the 2007 Phi Theta Kappa International Honors Institute at Wheaton College, Wheaton, Ill., in June. Bisig, 28, has taught full-time at Clark since 2003. In 2005, she was nominated for Clark College’s Exceptional Faculty Award, and in 2006 she was honored as “Accomplished Under 40” by the Vancouver Business Journal. Bisig, a graduate of Dana College, earned a masters degree in communications studies and journalism at South Dakota State University. Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, headquartered in Jackson, Miss., is the largest honor society in American higher education. Center The eight-story Firstenburg Tower began accepting patients this week as the medical center’s $146 million, 307,000 square-foot expansion was being completed. The new facility nearly doubles the size of the hospital campus on Mill Plain Boulevard. “With greatly expanded surgical capacity and featuring many ‘small details,’ the entire project was designed to provide a more comfortable experience for patients and guests,” according to CEO and executive director Joe Kortum. The tower itself has space for up to 154 private patients rooms on the 7th and 8th floors, including overnight accommodations for guests, offers views of Mt. Hood, Mt. St. Helens and the Portland skyline. In addition, the rooms offer bedside entertainment and information screens allowing patients and guests to watch movies, play games and access the internet and essential health records. In addition, the tower is a showcase facility for healthcare design, according to Kortum. The heart and vascular center on the first floor has five catheterization labs, including two with 3D imaging capability, and two dedicated open heart surgery rooms and 13 operating rooms Free valet parking is provided at the main entrance off Mill Plain Boulevard. The new Angelo Lobby offers access to pre-operative and laboratory services, an outpatient pharmacy, a fireside café, medical resource center, and Wi-Fi access. More than 400 of the medical center’s 3,200 employees work in the Firstenburg Tower. SWMC is a community-owned, nonprofit medical institution and is licensed for 442 beds. Arrive early for Marshall lecture Those attending the Gen. Peter Pace George C. Marshall Lecture that begins at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, in the auditorium in Hudson’s Bay High School at Mill Plain Boulevard and East Reserve Street, are advised to arrive early, since for security reasons, the doors will close promptly at 11 a.m. The lecture is free. Irish will present the priorities and future goals of La Center in 2007 and beyond during his state-of-the-city address at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, in the La Center Community Center, 1000 E 4th Street.
