Vancouver lost great friend today;
former mayor Al Angelo died at 87

Kay and Al Angelo, from a portrait

Al Angelo, southern Washington native, friend, complete businessman and former Vancouver mayor, died at home this morning at the age of 87.

Mr. Angelo is remembered first for lasting friendships, family commitment and good will; second, for his farsighted efforts helping to bring Vancouver into the second half of the 20th Century, as a member of the city’s Building Code Board, its Planning Commission, and on the Vancouver City Council from 1962 to 1969, the last four years as mayor; third as a businessman, whose Al Angelo Company owns and manages over 3,000 apartment units and close to 400,000-square feet of commercial office space.

With him every step of the way was his wife of nearly 60 years, Katheryn, with who bore him five children, Al (Corky) Angelo Jr. Craig E. Angelo, Gary A. Angelo, Larry A. Angelo and Kathy Angelo.

In addition to Mrs. Angelo and their children, Mr. Angelo is survived by two brothers, Lewis Angelo and Ted Angelo, both of Vancouver, 19 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The family-owned Al Angelo Company started out as a construction company in 1947, building houses. One of the first major multifamily projects was the 214-unit Brandt Terrace, which the company still owns. Heritage Place, north of Esther Short Park, built and owned by the company jump-started Vancouver’s downtown renaissance at the beginning of the 21st Century. This was followed by Four Seasons, a major commercial and residential development on NE 112th Avenue and Burton Road. Just this year the company revealed plans for what would be one of Vancouver’s tallest buildings, a 9-story office building just off Interstate 5 at Mill Plain Boulevard, the site of the former Denny’s Restaurant.

Mr. Angelo was in failing health in the past few years, but nevertheless was a frequent attendee of the Liars Club, which he helped found, and which meets weekly at Chronis Restaurant in downtown Vancouver.

Arrangements for services are pending, according to Ken Andrews, Vancouver Funeral Chapel spokesperson.

Riverview declares 10-cent dividend,
offers to repurchase 250,000 shares

Riverview Bancorp this week declared a 10-cent quarterly dividend on each share of stock, reports Riverview Bancorp president Pat Shaeffer. Schaeffer also reported that Riverview Bancorp will repurchase up to 250,000 of its common stock, which represents about 2 percent of the corporation’s outstanding shares.

Including the 2-for-1 stock split announced last August, the cash payout to stockholders is up 18 percent from a year ago, according to Shaeffer.

Shaffer said the dividend, to be paid on April 13, is the 38th consecutive quarterly dividend paid by the bank corporation.

Riverview Bancorp has assets of $863 million. It is the parent company of the 83-year-old Riverview Community Bank, Riverview Mortgage and Riverview Asset Management Corp. There are 18 branches, including 10 in Clark County and four in the Portland metropolitan area.
