Alishia Topper named
development director
Alishia Topper has been appointed director of development for the Columbia Springs Environmental Education Center Foundation. Topper will be responsible for developing strategies and campaigns to promote individual and corporate giving for the center and for increasing public understanding and support for the organization. The Columbia Springs Environmental Education Center is dedicated to countywide environmental education. The center is located at the former state fish hatchery on Evergreen Boulevard. Topper is a graduate of Washington State University and earned a masters degree at Portland State University, where she served two years as director of donor relations for the university’s athletic department. Topper also served as director of the Share Family Shelter in Vancouver. Elections beginning earlier this year The filing period for persons who will be running for local offices begins seven weeks earlier this year, reports Clark County auditor Greg Kimsey. Those who will be filing by mail may begin to do so as early as Monday, May 21. The changes in the filing period follow a 2005 mandate from the legislature to hold the state primary election on in August instead of September. This year the primary election will be on Tuesday, Aug. 21, and mail-in ballots will be sent to voters beginning on Wednesday, Aug. 1. The official week for filing in person begins Monday, June 4. Elective offices that are up during this off-year are city and town council positions, school board positions, and fire, port, cemetery, sewer and park district commissioners. WSU Vancouver holding forum on civil liberties A forum entitled “Casualties of the USA Patriot Act and the ‘War on Terror’” is being presented by the Center for Social and Environmental Justice at Washington State University Vancouver at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, in the WSU Vancouver Administration Building, room 110. Featured panel members are as follows: Brandon Mayfield recently awarded $2 million in a lawsuit against the federal government for his wrongful arrest in connection with the 2004 Madrid train bombing. Zaha Hassan and Tom Nelson, human rights activists and attorneys representing Al-Haramain Islamic Foundation and two of its lawyers in a warrant-less wiretapping lawsuit against the federal government, Kayse Jama, human rights activist and founder and director of the Center for Intercultural Organizing. Vancouver Lake Sailing Club Individuals and families interested is sailing will have an opportunity to learn more at a Vancouver Lake Sailing Club open house from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 21, in the clubhouse at 7110 NW 25th Avenue. The 95-member sailing club, formed 40 years ago, emphasizes racing on Vancouver Lake. A number of sail boats will be on display, including some for sale. People Lauren Hopson, Image Elementary School principal, has been selected as a Washington State Regional Distinguished Principal by Elementary School Principals Association of Washington. Hopson is one of 18 principals selected statewide. She was cited for professional growth and development, educational excellence, community relations and humanitarian activities. At 5:15 p.m. the council will go into executive session to discuss potential litigation. The council will convene a full session at 7 p.m., when it will consider a series of small annexations. n The board of directors of the Industrial Revenue Bond Public Corporation of Clark County meets at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, April 17, in the commissioners’ chambers in the Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin Street. n Clark County commissioners meet in regular session at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 17, and will consider increases in building and development fees. n The second in a week-long series of Earth Week forums sponsored by Friends of Clark County is at noon.
