Northern pikeminnow fishing
pays Last year, anglers fishing for northern pikeminnow who registered at the Port of Camas-Washougal boat ramp were averaging 4.8 fish a day, according to Bonneville Power Administration’s Northern Pikeminnow Sport Reward Fishery. At a minimum their registered catch was worth $4 a fish. The reward for northern pikeminnow goes up to $8 for each nine-inch-and-over fish after the same angler has caught 400 of the fish that devour salmon fry. The BPA reward program is part of the power agency’s program to protect salmon. Since the program began in 1990, more than 2.8 million northern pikeminnows have been caught in the Columbia and Snake Rivers as a result. According to BPA officials, the program has reduced preditation on baby salmon by 25 percent. The Port of Camas-Washougal’s boat ramp is a registration station for the program. Anglers may register between 11 a.m. and 7 a.m. daily and must return fish to the registration station the same day. During 2006, 2,749 anglers brought back 13,192 fish for rewards. A free northern pikeminnow fishing clinic is being held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 19, in the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife Region 5 office, 2108 Grand Boulevard, Vancouver.
