Mike Piper leaving the county to become
Vancouver’s first sustainability coordinator

Mike Piper, director of community services and corrections for Clark County for the past ten years, is leaving the county to become the City of Vancouver's first sustainability coordinator.

Vancouver city manager Pat McDonnell says, "Piper will take the lead in working with all city departments, as well as with community members and organizations in helping Vancouver become a more sustainable place to live."

McDonnell says that Piper has a long history and passion in sustainability and conservation efforts, which are vital to the role.

According to McDonnell, the position is a new one for the city. "We want to coordinate efforts to use resources efficiently, reduce waste, prevent pollution and environmental impacts, and take into account our shared objectives for a healthy environment, quality of life and economic vitality," McDonnell says.

Piper, who was once a Greenpeace activist, joined the county in 1994, after having been with the Washington Department of Community Development.

Clark County administrator Bill Barron says Piper has been a "driving force" in changes made in the county department, including the construction of the county's Center for Community Health on Fourth Plain Boulevard.

Barron says that an interim director for the county's community services department will be named as quickly as possible.

Patterson is a graduate of the State University of New York at Genesco.

MacKay & Sposito project engineer Kelly Uhacz has passed his professional engineering examinations and is licensed in the state of Washington. Uhacz, a graduate of Portland State University, holds a master of science in civil engineering from Portland State and has been with MacKay and Sposito for the past four years.

Bridget Yelton, project engineer at the Wilsonville branch of the Vancouver-based company, also passed her professional engineering examinations, and is also licensed as an engineer in Washington. Yelton, a Portland State University graduate, has been with the company for the past ten years.

Mr. Bean, who worked as a school resource officer, in addition to working patrol and other specialized positions, retired from the department in December 2005.

Mr. Bean coached baseball with the Salmon Creek Little League for eight years. He also coached football with the Clark County Youth Football for six years. He was an assistant football coach at Skyview High school and helped lead the Skyview team to the 2006 league championship.
