Mike Piper leaving
the county to become Mike Piper, director of community services and corrections for Clark County for the past ten years, is leaving the county to become the City of Vancouver's first sustainability coordinator. Vancouver city manager Pat McDonnell says, "Piper will take the lead in working with all city departments, as well as with community members and organizations in helping Vancouver become a more sustainable place to live." McDonnell says that Piper has a long history and passion in sustainability and conservation efforts, which are vital to the role. According to McDonnell, the position is a new one for the city. "We want to coordinate efforts to use resources efficiently, reduce waste, prevent pollution and environmental impacts, and take into account our shared objectives for a healthy environment, quality of life and economic vitality," McDonnell says. Piper, who was once a Greenpeace activist, joined the county in 1994, after having been with the Washington Department of Community Development. Clark County administrator Bill Barron says Piper has been a "driving force" in changes made in the county department, including the construction of the county's Center for Community Health on Fourth Plain Boulevard. Barron says that an interim director for the county's community services department will be named as quickly as possible. Marcy Patterson
