Dan Tonkovich files for re-election
to city council; gets competition

Long-time Vancouver city council member Dan Tonkovich filed for re-election today and promptly got competition from east Vancouver resident Pat Campbell, an unsuccessful candidate for state legislative positions in the 17th District.

Filing for local non-partisan offices continues through 5 p.m. Friday, June 8.

Yesterday, Port of Vancouver commissioner Arch Miller found himself with competition after Jerry Oliver filed for the same position.

Camas councilwoman Liz Pike yesterday filed for the mayoral office and today incumbent mayor Paul Dennis filed for re-election.

Helen Gerde, incumbent Camas councilwoman in Ward 2, found competition today from Steve Bang.

Three persons thus far are running for Position 4 on the La Center City Council. They are Mike Nolan, Ron Ostrander and Chris Foranzo.

Woodland Mayor Douglas Monge filed for re-election, but so did three others, Chuck Blum, John “JJ” Burke and Walt Hummel.

District 2 in the Port of Camas-Washougal has three candidates, Jim Gray, Robert Guetter and Bill Ward.

Port of Camas-Washougal to get RiverWalk
advisory committee report Wednesday

An advisory committee selected by the Port of Camas-Washougal, to make recommendations for development of a proposed multi-use development of Columbia River waterfront south of Highway 14 near port administrative offices, will present its report to port commissioners at 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 6.

The proposed public-private venture envisions spending $300 to $400 million on the 65-acre project over the next decade.

The advisory committee report favors a diverse development of housing, shops, workplaces, parks and public facilities, and retention of parks, trails and greenbelts.

East Evergreen Highway plan
getting another airing Thursday

Plans thus far developed by Vancouver’s Public Works and Transportation Departments for a major project aimed at supporting land use plans, providing urban services and retaining the natural beauty and character of the East Evergreen Highway corridor between SE 164th and 192nd Avenues will be presented to local residents, business owners and property owners at an open house at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 7, in the Fisher’s Landing Elementary School, 3600 SE Hiddenbrook Drive.

The East Evergreen Highway corridor has been receiving increased interest for future development. However, the area lacks comprehensive public water, sanitary sewer or surface water management systems, and the current roadway is in need of improvement, according to assistant city engineer Tom Boyer.

Other efforts are underway in this area and nearby neighborhoods toward long-term planning for the 192nd Avenue, Highway 14 and Columbia River areas. For further information, call Boyer at 696-8008.

Extraordinary model train exhibit open
to historical museum supporters

The Clark County Historical Museum is beneficiary of an evening in a 1,600-square-foot model train exhibit from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, June 9, reports museum executive director Susan Tissot.

Location of the exhibit, which provides for simultaneous operation of 24 trains, will be divulged after attendees pay $75 for a boarding pass for the evening. The proceeds will benefit the museum.

Tissot promises “heavy hors d’oeuvres,” and red wine from a private Clark County collection. In addition, there will be a silent and live auction. Attendees must be 21 or older, Tissot says. To buy tickets, call the museum, 993-5679.

PDX flight path changes for Rose Festival
expected to spread noise all around

Residents of the Vancouver-Portland metropolitan area may experience unusual aircraft noise conditions this week as the Federal Aviation Air Traffic Control responds to temporary security measures while several U.S. naval vessels are docked on Portland’s Willamette River as part of the Rose Festival celebration, according to Portland International Airport officials.

Aircraft will not be permitted to fly directly over the ships in downtown Portland. This will result in temporarily changed flight paths through Monday, June 11.
