Salvador Brotons
conducts Vancouver Symphony
Salvador Brotons conducts the Vancouver Symphony in a free concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, in Esther Short Park. Brotons has chosen light classical pieces for a “grand summer evening under the stars.” Selections include Rossini’s The Thieving Magpie Overture, Ponchielli’s Dance of the Hours, and the last movement of Mendelssohn’s Symphony #5. In addition, there will be selections from Swan Lake, The Wizard of Oz, Harry Potter Symphonic Suite and Star Wars. Blanks and lawn chair are suggested. Food and non-alcoholic beverage vendors will be on hand. Homeless Seven people in six categories have been recognized by the Council for the Homeless for their work and effort to end homelessness in Clark County. The awards will be presented during a Friday, Sept. 21, luncheon in the Hilton Vancouver Washington. Award winners are as follows: Diane Christie, executive director of Share, the Community Partners Award for starting and nurturing programs and facilities that have fed and housed thousands in Clark County over the past 15 years. Patricia White, First United Methodist Church, the Founder’s Award for developing financial resources and volunteers to support and lead the Emergency Shelter Clearinghouse for more than 10 years. Sue Meyer, Rabbi of Congregation Kol Ami, the Community Volunteer Award for recruiting and training volunteers for the Winter Hospitality Overflow program. Bob and Bea Howell, Cascades Presbyterian Church, the Community Supporters Award for supporting Friends of the Carpenter and Winter Hospitality Overflow. Teri Owen, Ready to Rent, the Community Advocate Award for helping a former program client become a program staffer. Tracie Baldwin, Vancouver Housing Authority, the Quiet Hero Award for nearly 20 years of providing every client with support and compassion. Vancouver Landing Celebrity Registration for Celebrity Hoops, the 3-on-3 hosted by the Share Volunteer Center. continues through Wednesday, Aug. 15, reports spokesperson Jessica Lightheart. The tournament that raises funds for Share is Saturday, Aug. 18, and Sunday, Aug. 19. The tournament includes a three-point tournament and a clam dunk contest. People Paul Winters, president of Winters and Associates, and Vancouver psychiatrist Bob Burlingame were paired in the U.S. National Indoor Hard Court Tennis Tournament at Club Green Meadows last week. Calendar The Vancouver City Council meets in a workshop session at 4 p.m. today, followed by a consent agenda session expected to begin about 6 p.m. Highlighting the consent agenda are proposed regulations removing C-TRAN operation from Main Street and relocating bus routes and bus stops on Broadway. Following these changes, the 7th Street transit center is scheduled to be closed and Main Street opened to two-way traffic.
