Port of Vancouver
to refine its In response to the results of the Tuesday, Aug.21, 2007, primary election, the Port of Vancouver recognizes and appreciates the voters of the Vancouver Port District, who voted down the port’s Industrial Development District levy. The port's mission is to create jobs and economic benefit for our community, and thus the port has developed plans to do this, and has successfully brought tenants and customers to southwest Washington. In the coming weeks and months, the port will re-assess how to maximize its resources and opportunities to create jobs and support community services for many years to come. “We’re disappointed,” said executive director Larry Paulson. “But the community has let us know they’re not in support of the IDD levy, regardless of whether they agree with our development plans. We will take into account the community’s message while we reconsider our plans for growth and development. “We are encouraged that the community is now beginning to be more aware of port issues and what the port does. We welcome continued community involvement as we move forward.” Brittany Pratt

Precautions are to be taken when boating or fishing in the lake. No crime news in
Insider, The Insider usually avoids reporting crime news, but this story has a nice twist and is presented in its entirety from a news release by Kim Kapp. “At approximately 7:20 p.m. Vancouver police officers responded to a 9-1-1– call from the Fred Meyer store on Grand Boulevard at E Mill Plain Boulevard regarding a carjacking that had just occurred. The female victim told police that she was confronted outside the store by a young Hispanic male who held a knife to her throat. The suspect took the victim’s vehicle, a 2005 Honda Accord 4-door from her and fled the scene in the vehicle. “The victim said that the vehicle was equipped with a GPS locating system through Guidepoint. Police contracted Guidepoint to notify them of the vehicle theft. The GPAS locating system was activated and the vehicle was found stopped and parked in the 3000 block of Harney Street. “Officers responded to the vehicle’s location, set up containment, and called for a K-9 search of the area. Officers used the K-9 and tracked the suspect to a nearby apartment in the 3100 block of Harney Street where he was apprehended. “The 22-year-old victim was unharmed during the incident and her vehicle was recovered. Editor points out editor’s error Yesterday the Daily Insider reported that Washington State University fell from 118th to 188th in the U.S. News and World Report’s ranking of national Universities. Not so, Columbian editor Lou Brancaccio pointed out by email. The news magazine actually rated WSU, along with the University of Missouri and Samford University (not to be confused with Stanford University), 118th in the nation.
