Deena Bisig named
2007 General George C.
Deena Bisig, 29-year-old instructor in the Communication Studies Department at Clark College, has been named winner of the General George C. Marshall Public Leadership Award presented by the Bank of Clark County. Bisig's volunteer commitments include assisting with Junior Achievement, the Kid’s Club at Orchards Elementary School, Winter Hospitality Overflow, and she serves as the executive council secretary for St. Andrew Lutheran Church. Bisig was selected as an Accomplished Under 40 Award recipient in 2006, is a host parent for the ASSE Student Exchange Program and is an advisor for Phi Theta Kappa. Currently enrolled in the Leadership Clark County program, Bisig is a graduate of Dana College, Blair, Neb., and earned a master of science degree in communication studies and journalism from South Dakota State University. Now in its 19th year, the Marshall Public Leadership Award is organized by the Vancouver National Historic Reserve Trust as one of many Celebrate Freedom programs that honor the legacy of General George C. Marshall. Marshall lived in Vancouver from 1936 to 1938, and was at the time a Brigadier General and served as Commander of the 5th Infantry Brigade at Vancouver Barracks. Marshall went on to serve as the chief of staff of the U.S. Army during World War II. He was Secretary of State after the war from 1947 to 1949. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for the Marshall Plan, which helped rebuild the economies of Europe and the Pacific Nations after the war. As recipient of the Marshall Award. Bisig will receive a stipend for a trip to Lexington, Va., to tour the Marshall Foundation, visit Colonial Williamsburg and Washington, D.C. Marshall Award recipients also play an active role in many of the Celebrate Freedom events and activities throughout the year. Vancouver Mayor Royce Pollard, will present Bisig with the Marshall Award during a special ceremony at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 7 in Marshall's former Vancouver home, the Marshall House, 1301 Officers Row. Growth Miller Nash LLP is hosting a Growth Management Act conference to discuss the consequences of Clark County’s recently adopted amendments to its 20-year Comprehensive Growth Management Plan. The program is being presented by the “From the Ground Up,” industry team at Miller Nash, a multidisciplinary team of lawyers serving private and public sector clients. In addition, Clark County commissioner Marc Boldt will share his perspective on the amended plan. The half-day conference begins at 8 a.m. A $25 fee for the conference includes breakfast.
