Andrew Alexander, Clark County native who interned with the Bank of Clark County in 2006, has been appointed to the newly created position of project coordinator, reports bank chairman Mike Worthy. Alexander will work with the bank’s executive team. Alexander is a graduate of Washington State University Pullman, where he was also a resident advisor. He also worked with the Community Service Learning Center in Pullman. Alexander is an active member of Sacred Heart Parish in Battle Ground. Evening tour of Port of Vancouver set The Port of Vancouver has scheduled at evening tour of the Port of Vancouver from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25. The tour includes a presentation by port deputy executive director Todd Coleman and a light evening meal. Participants will be shown a look inside the secure area at the port and will see up close the port’s mobile harbor crane, largest of its kind in North America. The crane is capable of lifting two space shuttles. There is no charge for the tour, but reservations are required and participants must have photo identification available. Homework Helpline back on the air Homework Helpline returns to the air at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct, 23, on Comcast cable television channel 28. The program is in its 19th season of providing homework assistance in all subject areas and at all grade levels to viewers from all schools in Clark County, reports Doug Hamilton, manager of Video Services for Evergreen Public Schools. To request homework assistance, viewers may call 896-4357 and speak with a tutor during show hours, or they may leave a phone message at any time requesting a return call for homework help. Tutoring requests can also be posted to the program's Web page at http://hwhl.egreen.wednet.edu. The live call-in program airs Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings, 7-8 p.m. and runs from October 23 through May 28, 2008. News briefs Former Oregon governor John Kitzhaber will be the featured speaker at the day-long annual Healthcare Communicators of Oregon conference on marketing and communications Friday, Nov. 2, according to the organization’s president Ken Cole, manager of public affairs and communications at Southwest Washington Medical Center. Calendar The first of two public open houses discussing progress on planning improvements for the I-5 corridor between Vancouver and Portland, including upgrading the Interstate Bridge crossing, is being presented by the staff of the Columbia River Crossing Task Force at between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. this evening in the former Hayden Island Yacht Club, 12050 N Jantzen Drive. This is one of several meetings being held throughout the state to help formulate a new 10-year strategic master plan for higher education. Oops, doggone it Yesterday the Insider reported that newly appointed Clark County Community Services director Vanessa Gaston would succeed Rich Carson. That is not so, as dozens of Insider readers have reported. Gaston succeeds Mike Piper in that job. Carson, who recently left the county, was director of Clark County Community Development. The Department of Community Services works in partnership with other agencies, jurisdictions, and the people of Clark County to plan and manage social services and to achieve a safe and healthy community. Most services are contracted to agencies providing direct services throughout Clark County. The Department of Community Development is primarily involved in County code enforcement and the building permit process.
