Local voters displeased
with taxes and incumbents

Local voters were turning their noses up at three-term incumbent Port of Vancouver commissioner Arch Miller, long-time Vancouver city councilman Dan Tonkovich and Battle Ground incumbent mayor John Idsigna, according to preliminary returns from Tuesday’s almost ho-hum general election.

In Clark County, they joined voters across the state in defeating a measure that would have eliminated the 60 percent majority requirement for property taxes and they joined Tim Eyman’s bandwagon for requiring a vote on all tax measures passed by the legislature.

The vote against Miller wasn’t even close. Jerry Oliver, who campaigned on the slogan “Time for a change,” was leading Miller 19,259 votes to 13,001. Oliver took up the cudgel earlier this year by leading a successful petition drive to put a tax  adopted by the port to buy Columbia River industrial property to a vote of the people.

The proposed port tax, however, was overwhelmingly turned down at the primary election.

The fate of incumbents Tonkovich and Idsigna is far from sealed, though.

Tonkovich’s opponent, perennial candidate Pat Campbell was ahead of Tonkovich 8,982 to 8,910, when vote counting ended Tuesday.

Battle Ground’s mayor, Idsigna, was leading by one vote when the Tuesday night tally was ended: Idsigna, 701 votes; opponent P. Zandamela, 700 votes.

The Clark County Elections Department had counted a little over 60,000 votes in the first round of counting Tuesday. New results will be available after 5 p.m. as crews continue counting. As many as 10,000 more votes could be counted.
