Maya Lin land bridge open to
public Friday
The public is being offered a sneak preview and is invited to walk across the Maya Lin land bridge over Highway 14, connecting Fort Vancouver with the Columbia River, Friday, Nov.16, beginning at 3 p.m. The pedestrian and non-motorized vehicle bridge, more than 80 percent complete, won’t open again until the spring of 2008. Friday’s event is akin to a grand opening though with four of the artists working on the project available to talk about the more than $12 million project and legacy centerpiece of the Lewis and Clark commemoration that concluded in 2006. The concept of the bridge is Lin’s. However, she won’t be at the sneak preview. The engineering and final design is that of Johnpaul Jones, founding principal of Jones & Jones Architects and Landscape Architects, Ltd., Seattle. Jones will be in attendance, as will René Senos, senior associate at Jones & Jones, a key contributor to the native landscape architecture and design at the site; Lillian Pitt, an accomplished Pacific Northwest Native American artist, whose work at the site includes the Welcoming Gate and Seating Baskets; and Peter Attila Andrusko, a master artisan in stone, glass, metal, wood and other materials, who created a 400-pound stone circle at the site. The Vancouver Land Bridge and Interpretive Trail is one of seven art installations included in the Confluence Project, which largely features the work of Lin, the internationally renowned artist, who created the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Carpooling is highly encouraged. Parking at Old Apple Tree Park, 112 Columbia Way, is limited to three small public lots across the street from tunnel access to the park. Parking is also available at Who-Song and Larry’s, 111 Columbia Way. Construction of the project, under contract to Kiewit Pacific, is a partnership of Confluence Project members, the National Park Service, the City of Vancouver and the Washington State Department of Transportation, and is being made possible through federal, state and private funding.
