Mayor throws down gauntlet to mayor

Mayor Royce Pollard                              Mayor Tom Potter

Vancouver Mayor Royce Pollard had thrown down the gauntlet to Portland Mayor Tom Potter—the challenge—to see who can raise the most money for Portland Radio station KPAM 860’s Operation Santa Claus, a fundraiser for military families.

The losing mayor must attend one of the winning mayor’s city council meetings and recite 15 things he likes best about the rival city.

Pollard called in his challenge to Bob Miller’s show Monday morning while Potter was working the KPAM telephones for the fundraiser, sponsored by the radio station and Pamplin Media, in partnership with the Salvation Army, to assist military families from Oregon and Southwest Washington suffering financial hardship.

Now in its fourth year, the effort has raised $500,000 for distressed military families in the region.

Pollard will do his stint on KPAM in the morning on Thursday, Dec . 6.

“I’m calling on all my military friends and Vancouver residents to support me in this effort,” Pollard said.

Contributions may be made by calling (866) 617-2682.

Local artist creates White House
Christmas tree ornament

            Elida Field                             White House ornament

Washougal artist Elida Field created a Christmas Tree ornament for the White House tree, where it is displayed on the official White House Christmas.

The tree celebrates the theme “Holiday in the National Parks,” according to Tracy Fortmann, superintendent of the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. The tree is decorated with ornaments representing the country’s 391 national park service sites.

Field’s design was chosen by the Friends of the Arts Board. Field used a collage painting technique, one of her specialties, to wrap a six-inch gold ball with maps, dates and images of Fort Vancouver.

While the ornament will remain part of the White House collection, it may not be reproduced. However, Field created another Fort Vancouver ornament that includes some of the same concepts. A limited number are on sale in the Historic Reserve Gift Shop on Officers Row. Field will sign copies of the ornament on Saturday Dec. 8, and Sunday, Dec. 9. The price of the ornament is $19.95.

Storm causes transportation woes

Remnants of the Monday rain and windstorm still plague transportation corridors in and out of Vancouver.

Interstate 5 remains closed between mileposts 68 to 88 (the Chehalis and Centralia areas) due to floodwaters from the Chehalis River. The Washington State Department of Transportation advises that motorists will not be able to travel between Vancouver and Seattle for at least the next few days.

This is the first time since 1996 that I-5 has been completely closed in both directions.

The Sunset Highway (U.S. 26) between Portland and Seaside is closed from milepost 47 to milepost 2, at Seaside. Numbers of other Oregon costal highways are closed, including U.S. 101 north of Tillamook.
