Former road to nowhere opens
in downtown Vancouver

West 4th Street, downtown’s road to nowhere, which has just been opened, and meanders two blocks from Columbia Street, where it connects with W 6th Street in a roundabout on 6th and Esther Streets.

Shown above are photographs by Larry Easter of some of the murals painted along south side of newly opened 4th street in downtown Vancouver. Paintings were done by Vancouver muralists and intended for city’s World War II commemoration in 2005. Many more dramatic scenes await the visitor.

Furthermore, the street opens circulation around the Vancouver Convention Center and the Hilton Vancouver Washington area. Street improvements include sidewalks and enhanced streetscaping, in keeping with the redesigned Esther Short Park.

The streets also opens to view some of Vancouver’s most impressive mural work, originally to have been part of the city’s celebration of the end of World War II.

Along the south side of the new street are a series of murals of World War II scenes along the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad right-of-way. These were done by Vancouver muralists and are a must see by Vancouver residents and visitors alike.

Informational meeting on
Fourth Plain changes set

An informal community meeting and open house to discuss potential zoning code and streetscape changes along Fourth Plain Boulevard takes place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2007, in the Vancouver School District Center for Educational Leadership, 2921 Falk Road.

The City of Vancouver is proposing development code changes and new street standards, which are intended to promote an attractive, pedestrian-friendly streetscape along Fourth Plain Boulevard between St. Johns Road and Burton Road.

Proposed code changes would ensure that, as the boulevard redevelops, most new buildings will be located closer to the street and be more accessible and attractive to pedestrians. The transportation study shows how sidewalks, benches and street trees would be improved.

For further information, call Bryan Snodgrass, Vancouver Community Planning Department, 487-7946.
