Mary Firstenburg dies

Mary Elizabeth Firstenburg was planning to be a missionary, but then she met Ed (E.W.) Firstenburg at the age of 19, fell in love, got married and began a 72-year adventure.  She was born in Chicago, Illinois to Jack and Gladys Moffat.  Mary lived in Glascow, Kansas until she was ten years of age.  Her family moved to Seattle, where she lived until she married.  Mary and Ed began their married life together in Ridgefield, Washington.   Their children, William  Firstenburg,  Bruce  Firstenburg and Joyce Firstenburg Chiles were raised in Ridgefield.  The family lived there for more than forty years before moving to Vancouver.

Mary was a wonderful wife, mother, homemaker, world traveler and volunteer.  For more than 40 years, she served on the Board of Directors of First Independent, the region's largest privately-held, locally-owned bank.  Mary was a member of the Priscilla Club, which founded the local Ridgefield Library. She was a member of the Ridgefield Study Club, the Ridgefield Garden Club and the Eastern Star.  She was active in the local Parent Teacher Association and served as a Cub Scout den mother for several years.  For many years Mary enjoyed volunteering at the Vancouver VA Medical Center as a Red Cross Gray Lady.

Mary and E.W. both loved to travel.  After turning 40, Mary learned to speak French and become quite fluent, serving as a translator when the couple traveled in French-speaking countries.  Into her late 70s, Mary loved riding on the back of their Honda 90 while she and E.W. explored old logging roads and the deserts of the Southwest.  Mary was an avid reader and she loved playing all kinds of card games, but especially bridge.  She also loved to go on long walks "as long as the ground was flat."

Mary was a volunteer and philanthropist at heart.  She and her husband made significant charitable gifts to local nonprofits in SW Washington over the past 20 years.  The Firstenburg Community Center, The Firstenburg Fountain and Firstenburg Student Commons at Washington State University Vancouver and E.W. & Mary Firstenburg Tower at Southwest Washington Medical Center were named after the couple in thanks for their generosity.  In 2008, Innovative Services Northwest named their new headquarters the Mary Firstenburg Family Center.

Mary passed away February 17th, 2009 after a long illness.  She is survived by her husband, E.W., William and Jeanne Firstenburg, Bruce and Diane Firstenburg, and Joyce and Paul Chiles.  Mary has seven grandchildren, and twelve great grandchildren.

Private family services will be held this week.

Contributions may be made In Memory of Mary Elizabeth Firstenburg to Innovative Services Northwest, 9414 NE 4th Plain Blvd, Vancouver 98662, or Ray Hickey Hospice House, 2112 SE Mill Plain Blvd, Vancouver, 98661.

Andrew Geisler named new Catholic high school development director

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Preparatory High School’s President-Principal Ed Little recently announced that Andrew J. Geisler will join Seton’s growing staff as Development Director as they prepare to open the school in late August 2009. He will take the helm as Seton’s Director of Development in mid-February.

It will be the first regional Catholic secondary school since the doors closed on Providence Academy in 1966.  Geisler has held several leadership positions in operations management with Menlo Worldwide, a leading global provider of outsourced transportation and logistics management services.  He holds a BA in International Finance from The George Washington University and an MBA in Management from Washington State University.

Geisler served over six years in the U.S. Navy as a helicopter pilot in Italy and the Middle East.  He is a veteran of the 1990 Gulf War and a member of the American Legion.  Andrew, his wife Cheryl and their daughters Britta and Annika attend St. Joseph Church in Vancouver where he is an active volunteer.

Vancouver Urban Forestry encourages neighborhood involvement

Vancouver Urban Forestry is encouraging Vancouver residents who are enthusiastic about trees to participate in the NeighborWoods program.

NeighborWoods Stewards receive free education from local arboriculture experts on a variety of tree-related topics including: tree identification, tree biology, proper tree care, Vancouver tree regulations, tree planting, native trees and shrubs, and the benefits of trees. NeighborWoods Stewards gain the knowledge needed to then act as liaisons to their neighborhood associations, provide tree-related advice, and conduct tree plantings or tree-related education projects in their neighborhoods.

The 2009 NeighborWoods training sessions are every Tuesday evening, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., from March 10 through April 14.  Participants must pre-register and must attend every session. Participation is limited to the first 25 applicants. Applications are due by March 3. Applications are available upon request by calling (360) 619-1108 or emailing urbanforestry@ci.vancouver.wa.us; applications may also be downloaded from www.cityofvancouver.us/urbanforestry (click on "NeighborWoods").

NeighborWoods is coordinated by the Urban Forestry Division of Vancouver Public Works in partnership with Friends of Trees, Clark Public Utilities, Teragan & Associates, Emerald Tree, and Collier Arbor Care.

Visit www.cityofvancouver.us/urbanforestry or call (360) 619-1108 for more information.
