Pollard: State of the City is good, but is it good enough?
Vancouver Mayor Royce Pollard. Photo Courtesy Barbara Kerr, Clark College Vancouver Mayor Royce Pollard cautioned citizens not to be satisfied with mediocrity during his 11th State of the City address today before an audience of more than 300. I am happy to tell you that the state of America’s Vancouver is good. However, we have to ask ourselves, “Is ‘good’ good enough?” “Every morning when I wake up I ask myself, “Can we be better?” I know we can and that is a big reason why I proudly serve as Mayor of this amazing city.” Pollard focused on seizing opportunity in his speech,. He discussed the importance of supporting major projects such as downtown waterfront development and the Columbia Crossing bridge as key to the city’s ability to grow and flourish. The preferred bridge alternative, Pollard said, must include a replacement bridge option and must include light rail. How far light rail should extend into Vancouver continues to be a point of discussion. Pollard also implored the audience to support connecting downtown with the city’s historical district. “Another vital connection that will be made is the connection between downtown and the Historic Reserve with a freeway cap or lid from about 9th Street to Evergreen Boulevard. This connection will once again unite our historic area with our thriving downtown. We need bold projects like this . . . projects that will lift America’s Vancouver above the ordinary.” Cancer takes Janelle Schaefer at 43 A service to celebrate the life of Janelle Schaefer Sleeper, 43, who died peacefully at home with family and friends at her side Tuesday following a long and heroic battle with cancer, will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 1, in Good Shepherd Episcopal Church on Ellsworth Road.
