City expected to hold property
for potential center for the arts

While members of the Southwest Washington Center for the Arts are working out plans for financing and operating a $58 million downtown performing arts center, it has asked the City of Vancouver to place a two-year hold on block 10, the preferred site for the center, which would be built on a full city block between Columbia and Washington Streets and 8th and 9th Streets kitty corner from Esther Short Park.

During the two-year development hold the SWCA will develop a plan to assure the financial and operational integrity of the center in cooperation with public and private funding partners, according to SWCA chair, Val Ogden. Ground would not be broken until capital funds were secured, Ogden added.

The multi-story arts center would include an art gallery, street-level shops and bistros, condominiums and offices.

Voters OK Green Mountain levy, nix
Woodland bonds, fire district levy

Clark County voters yesterday approved $1.36 million in school levies over the next four years for the Green Mountain School District.

At the same time, both Clark County and Cowlitz County voters turned down a proposed  $49.4 million bond issue for a new high school in Woodland. The bond issue required a 60 percent majority but got only 55.6 majority in Clark County and 54.4 majority in Woodland.

The Fire District 10 proposal to add a $1 per $1.000 assessed valuation levy did not even get majority approval. That measure failed with only a 46.7 voter approval.
