Camas-Washougal port commissioner hires
on as project director at Port of Vancouver

Port of Camas-Washougal commissioner Alan Hargrave has been appointed to the Port of Vancouver’s facilities staff as a project director at the Port of Vancouver, port CEO/executive director Larry Paulson announced today.

At the Port of Vancouver, Hargrave will provide construction oversight of the West Vancouver Freight Access Project, and other construction projects at the port.

A construction management consultant, Hargrave, has been a project manager for family-owned George Schmid and Sons Inc. for the past 28 years. Hargrave is a native of Camas and currently resides in Washougal.

Hargrave is a member of the Columbia River Economic Development Council’s board of trustees.

Conservative Dinesh D’Souza will be
WSU Vancouver public affairs lecturer

Best-selling conservative author Dinesh D’Souza will speak on “The Crisis at Home and Abroad: Is Religion the Problem?” at the annual Washington State University Vancouver Public Affairs Lecture Series at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday April 9, in the Skyview High School auditorium, 1300 NE 139th Street.

D’Souza is a staunch defender of the superiority of Christianity as a foundation for democratic politics. The WSU Vancouver annual public affairs lecture series alternates between conservative and liberal presentations. Past speakers are Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Seymour Hirsch, former attorney general John Ashcroft and Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean.

The event is sponsored by the WSU Thomas S. Foley Institute for Public Policy and Public Service, The Columbian, the WSU Vancouver Office of Student Involvement, and the WSU Vancouver chancellor’s office. Tickets are $10 plus a service fee and can be obtained through Safeway TicketsWest outlets, by calling (800) 992-8499, or by going to http://www.ticketswest.com.

Three take home Workforce-
Friendly Educator Awards

The Southwest Washington Youth Council and the Southwest Washington Workforce Development Council have honored three educators for their exceptional commitment and support to development of workforce skills.

People

Six Clark County students have earned Clark County Chamber of Commerce scholarships, chamber president and CEO Walt Ronish announced. The winners are as follows: Wesley A. Ballou, Skyview High School; Karina España and Samantha Shipman, both of Columbia River High School; Jude A. Homola and Amanda L. Washington, both of Battle Ground High School; and Sara Ross, Prairie High School.

People mistakes

Yesterday, our report on the National Policy Maker of the Year Award presented U.S. Rep. Brian Baird (D-3rd), we misrepresented his past by stating he had been a professor at Evergreen College. Not so. Baird, a licensed clinical psychologist who has practiced in Washington state and Oregon, taught at the university level and is a former chairman of the Department of Psychology at Pacific Lutheran University. Thhhhats not all, folks: We called Mike Kessler, newly appointed to the Port of Vancouver security department, Max in the lead paragraph of the story. We apologize to Baird and Kessler and thank the Port of Vancouver’s executive director, Larry Paulson, for bringing our errors to light.
