Port of Vancouver recognized The Port of Vancouver has been certified as a member of the Leadership Club of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership for its use of green power to provide at least 60 percent of its electrical energy requirements. While other ports, including the Port of Portland, are in EPA’s Green Power Partnership, the Port of Vancouver is the only port in the United States that is included in the Leadership Club. To achieve this, the port has $18,018 renewable energy credits from Green Mountain Energy for 2008. Green Mountain is a northwest electric energy wind farm. The Port of Vancouver leads all other ports in importing electric energy windmills. Last year 305 complete wind turbines were shipped to the United States over Port of Vancouver docks. Port executive director Larry Paulson says that the decision by the port to become seriously involved in renewable wind energy makes good sense both environmentally and from a business standpoint. Wind turbine imports contributed to over 72,000 longshoremen works hours during 2007, according to Paulson. Through its purchase of green energy the port will be eliminating 1,159 metric tons of carbon dioxide associated with conventional energy production. It is the equivalent of recycling 10.4 million aluminum cans, recycling 1.7 million pounds of newspaper or removing 370 cars from the road annually.
