Nez Perce return for Chief Redheart Memorial April 19

Riderless horse presentation remembers Chief Redheart

Two hours of colorful pomp and ceremony will mark the annual Nez Perce memorial ceremony at Vancouver Barracks in the Vancouver Historic Reserve beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 19.

Each year since 1998, tribal officials, elders and U.S. Army veterans commemorate the release of Chief Redheart and 32 Nez Perce tribal members who were captured by Gen. O.O. Howard and held in the Vancouver stockade over the winter of 1877-78.

The band, which was in Idaho when arrested, had not participated in hostilities between the Indians and the U.S. Army, but Chief Redheart did not sign a new treaty reducing Nez Perce lands by more than tenfold. Gen. Howard had the Indians brought to the barracks as an example of American right. A baby died during incarceration and before the band was released without trial in the spring.

But that was many moons ago.

Nez Perce put on colorful show during commemoration

The ceremony, attended by city officials including Mayor Royce Pollard, is moving and elegant, full pf pageantry. Speeches and songs are interrupted by drumming and dancing and a special riderless horse ceremony. About noon the event concludes with a peace pipe ceremony, honoring all past and present military veterans. All  U.S. military members and veterans are invited to participate in the pipe ceremony.

There is no charge for the event that is held on the barracks parade grounds on 5th Street, just north of the Hudson’s Bay Stockade and the entrance to the Maya Lin land bridge. For further information, call City Hall, 696-8211.
