Richard Hauan appointed
superintendent Gov. Chris Gregoire has appointed Richard Hauan to be superintendent of the Washington State School for the Deaf in Vancouver. Gregoire named Hauan interim superintendent last September. Prior to that appointment, he had been serving as assistant superintendent since July 2004. “Rick has demonstrated admirably that he has the skills and commitment to improve the education of deaf and hard of hearing students throughout the state,” Gregoire said. “He’s done a great job of networking with school districts across the state so they get the assistance they need.” Hauan said he is pleased to be given the opportunity to continue his work. Founded in 1886, the School
for the Deaf provides educational and residential services for eligible
children from birth through age 21. It also provides consultation and

The following kinds of taxes related to light rail will be discussed: gasoline tax, sales tax, property tax, car tab fees, vehicle weight fees, vehicle value tax, vehicle capacity tax, employment tax, and tolls. The Columbia Crossing Project working on plans for a proposed replacement of the I-5 Interstate bridges between Vancouver and Portland, and is expected to report on a favored option later this spring. Vancouver council approves one The Vancouver City Council has approved a 77-acre annexation in the Orchards area, one of the largest in recent years. The area on the north side of the city, between Highway 500 and Fourth Plain Boulevard and I-205 and Gher Road, is almost entirely commercially zoned. Property owners in the area initiated the annexation in March 2007. Leadership conference tackles Sponsored by First Independent and Vancouver and Portland business interests, a day-long business leadership conference tomorrow in the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, will tackle trust and ethics problems in business. Presenters are the father-son team Stephen R. Covey and Steven M. R. Covey, both of whom are authors and organizational exerts. Other sponsors of the conference are The Columbian, Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce, Portland Business Alliance and KXL Radio. Registration begins at 7:45 a.m. Admission is $199 per person. City looking for frog counters Volunteers of all ages are being sought for the 8th annual critter count Saturday, April 12, conducted by the Vancouver Water Resources Center. Subjects of the count are frogs and other amphibians, all of which are sensitive to changing environmental conditions. Training will be conducted at the Water Center, 4600 SE Columbia Way from 9 to 10 a.m. Volunteers will be carpooled to various locations for the count that is 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Volunteers will be overseen by author and field guide, Char Corkran and volunteers from the NW Ecological Research Institute, Washington State University Vancouver and Clark College. Engineering group transferred Clark County’s Development Engineering Services is being transferred from the Community Development Department to the Public Works Department, according to Glenn Olson, deputy county administrator. Olson says that the move offers increased efficiency through improved flexibility and allows for a more consistent development permitting process.
