Carrie Achilles wins $5,000 worth
of new clothes for SafeChoice

Carrie Achilles, Vancouver, recently entered the Pantene Beautiful Wishes contest, sponsored by the hair and skin conditioning company, trying to win a prize for the YWCA Clark County's SafeChoice.

And she did. Pantene is sending a $5,000 check to SafeChoice so that clothes can be bought locally that fit.

SafeChoice, offers shelter for women and their children seeking safety from abusive relationships. Along with advocacy based counseling programs, it helps women find employment, which is a large factor in helping them achieve independence.

Achilles wish will provide new undergarments, shoes and business attire for the women of SafeChoice, which Achillies hopes will strengthen their self-esteem. “Many women come to SafeChoice with literally the clothes on their back,” said Sherri Bennett, SafeChoice Director. "Carrie's gift will have a positive impact on the women we serve."

Port of Camas-Washougal holding public
discussion on future of east industrial park

The Port of Camas/Washougal is holding a special meeting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, to review and receive public input on the future uses of the eastern portion of the port’s East Industrial Park.

Options for the 127 acres at the east end of the port's industrial park include a range of light and heavy industrial uses to a wider range of employment uses, such as a business park with accessory uses including limited retail and professional services to serve business park tenants.

The commission is also expected to determine conditions under which it would sell all or a portion of the property. An analysis is available on the Port’s website at www.portcw.com/ipd.php. For further information, call Mary Murphy, 835-2196.

Statewide unemployment still under 5 percent

Washington’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to 4.9 percent in March, up .4 percentage points from February’s near-record-low of 4.5 percent, according to the state Employment Security Department.

The rise in unemployment was accompanied by a 3,200 decline of non-agricultural jobs. It was the first month-over-month decline in the number of jobs in Washington since September 2007.

“March was the 18th month in a row that Washington’s unemployment was under 5 percent,” said Employment Security Commissioner Karen Lee.

However, seasonally unadjusted employment figures tell a different story. Unadjusted employment rates include all categories of employment, including part-time employees and sole proprietors.

Statewide that unemployment rate was 5.3 percent. In Clark County the rate was 6.9 percent, but it showed an increase of 1,620 people at work over the previous month.

Out of a Clark County labor force of 216,630 persons, 201,750 were at work in March, according to the labor department.

Deb Wallace setting up day-long
online web dialogue on education

Taking advantage of web technology, the House Higher Education Committee is holding an online web dialogue Thursday May 1, for anyone interested in statewide education issues, reports the chair of the committee, Rep. Deb Wallace (D-17th).

Wallace says that she and the ranking minority member on the committee, Republican Rep. Glenn Anderson, believe that the using Internet technology is the easiest way to get to the largest number of people who have interests in the state’s educational systems.

The web dialogue is open to anyone wanting to participate and will run all day, Wallace says. According to Wallace anyone may go to the website and participate at any time of the day. Reports will be available to participants. To find out how to participate, go to Wallace’s website, www.housedemocrats.wa.gov/members/wallace.
