Pink Power blows away one-
day fund raising records

Planners for the Southwest Washington Medical Center’s Pink Power Strikes Again fundraiser were warily out to come up with $500,000 to complete a campaign to finance a $4 million Breast Care Center in the medical center’s Physicians’ Pavilion.

To their delight they came up with an all-time record $815,000 from a single fundraising event in Clark County, in this instance, for the party they threw at Big Al’s Bowling Alley last Thursday.

More than 650 people attended the event that included major support from Al and Sandee Kirkwood, owners of Big Al’s, First Independent, The Columbian and Jan and Steve Oliva.

Designed specifically for women, the new Breast Care center will provide better access to the many services they need in an environment that is easily accessible and comforting, according to medical center officials.

The new 12.27-acre site will be bought for $2,560,000. The new school is expected to be completed in May 2010.

Old-time barn dance to raise
funds for historical museum

The 2008 Clark County Historical Society’s fundraiser is a real hoe-down, reports co-chairs Nadine Robertson and Dick Colf.

It is an “old-time” barn dance in a real barn on the Dick and Bob Colf horse farm on Cedar Creek east of Woodland. The function, an auction and barbecue, begins with dance lessons at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 31.

The band, Lincoln’s Beard, plays soft, southern country rock, according to Susan Tissot, executive director of the historical society’s museum in Vancouver. She says, not necessarily western, more on the country side.

Tevis Laspa is the auctioneer. Dress is casual. Denim and boots are expected to prevail.

Admission is $65 for members of the Clark County Historical Society, $75 for non-members. Guests must be at least 21 years old. For further information, call 993-5679.
