101-year-old Kiggins house
makes
It almost seemed to be done in nearly a day’s work—seven hours on city streets Sunday—for a crew from Scappoose-based Northwest Structural Moving to move the 101-year-old J. P. Kiggins home from its Evergreen Boulevard site to its new location 18 blocks away at the foot of H Street in the Arnada neighborhood. In all there were seven turns on city streets, not including backing the huge home to its final resting place next door to Bruce and Judith Wood, who will make the historic home theirs later this year. How do house movers move a three-story house other than carefully? With great skill. Hundreds turned out yesterday to watch scampering orange-shirted structural movers weave in and out from beneath the creeping structure, working the dollies beneath to negotiate street corners fit only for automobiles. On straight stretches the six-wheel-drive Oskosh tow truck got up to three miles an hour, all the while missing every power and telephone pole, scraping off only a few outreaching tree limbs. So accurately did the movers negotiate narrow residential streets they didn’t have to back up and try again, at least while this photographer was watching. Movers laid plastic sheets beneath the wheels during turns, and laid plywood over grass and timbers alongside curbs. In the aftermath it was hard to tell that a gigantic piece of Vancouver’s history had gone by.
