Bravo! Vancouver presents
The Gospel Hummingbirds

Bravo! Vancouver presents The Gospel Hummingbirds, internationally known rock, blues, jazz, R & B singers in their final concert of the year Saturday, June 14, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 400 Andreson Road.

In 1993, the Gospel Hummingbirds album Steppin’ Out earned a Grammy nomination in the category of Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album. That same year the album received the French “Jazz Academy” Award as Best Gospel Album of the Year.

Governor orders flags at half-staff honoring
Ridgefield’s Army Pvt. Andrew J. Shields

Gov. Chris Gregoire has ordered flags across the state flown at half-staff today to honor Battle Ground’s U.S. Army Pvt. Andrew J. Shields, 19, who was killed while on duty in Afghanistan last Sunday.

Construction begun on four
county neighborhood parks

Construction has begun on four Clark County neighborhood parks, reports  Dave Dolan, construction manager.

The parks are the 2.5-acre Sgt. Brad Crawford Park in Felida, the 3-acre Road’s End Park at NE 54th Avenue and NE 40th Street, Harmony Ridge  Park at NE @8th Street and NE 182nd Avenue, and Oak Grove Park, NE 159th Avenue at NE 70th Street.

The financing and design of the parks came from county park impact fees.

Arts Equity Onstage looking
toward fourth season

Vancouver-based Arts Equity Onstage, whose series of plays and productions was interrupted late last year, is looking forward to resuming operations this fall, reports Arts Equity Onstage impresario Llewellyn Rhoe.

The season’s offering will include the following: Kevin Kling’s 21A, Tom Cone’s True Mummy, Sam Shephard’s The God of Hell, Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, and Eugene O’Neill’s Anna Christie.

According to Rhoe, Arts Equity Onstage will share residency in the North Bank Artists Gallery, 1005 Main Street.

North Bank Artists Gallery will be open until 9 p.m. Friday, June 6, during Vancouver’s First Friday Arts Walk.

Productions will be offered in both Vancouver and Portland.

Vancouver lead agency on DUI task force

The City of Vancouver has been named lead agency for Clark County’s Driving Under the Influence Task Force.

Vancouver community policing specialist Doris Girt has been appointed DUI Task Force coordinator.

Top priorities for the two-year program is to reduce vehicular crashes involving impaired drivers and speed-related crashes, and to increase seat belt and child restraint use.

County law enforcement agencies working with the task force are police departments from Camas, La Center, Ridgefield and Washougal, the Clark County Sheriff’s office the Washington State Patrol.

Image Elementary school to
celebrate worldwide diversity
 

Students in Image Elementary School will celebrate worldwide diversity with songs, dances, games and food during the Evergreen Public Schools’ annual Culture Day Thursday, June 12.

Each homeroom class has chosen a different country to celebrate. The public is invited to participate, according to principal Lauren Hopson.

According to Hopson, parents of Image school students speak 26 different languages.

Programs begin at 9:30 a.m. Assemblies will be held at 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. Image Elementary is at 4400 NE 112th Avenue.
