Vancouver earns state ecology
award for perfect performance

Public Works Director Brian Carlson, Veolia Vancouver Project Manager Tom Burns, Assistant City Engineer Tom Boyer, left to right, receive perfect performance awards from Ecology Compliance Specialist Pat Bailey at ceremony Tuesday.

City of Vancouver officials, staff and facilities operators have earned the state Department of Ecology's 2007 Outstanding Performance Award.

This department recognizes the best wastewater treatment plant operators in Washington each year.

Public Works director Brian Carlson and assistant city engineer Tom Boyer accepted the award Tuesday from Pat Bailey, Ecology compliance specialist, for 100 percent compliance at Westside and Marine Park Water Reclamations facilities.

This was the ninth year that Vancouver’s facilities have won the award.

To save gas and diesel fuel, some Public
Works staff will work four ten-hour days

Clark County Public Works is changing its work schedules for road and parks maintenance crews this summer, which will to cut gasoline and diesel fuel use by an estimated 10 percent.

Working fewer, longer days will conserve about 6,500 gallons of fuel and save the county $26,000 over the next several months, according to Public Works operations manager Greg Shafer.

The change will also reduce commute trips for workers, generating a potential 20 percent in fuel savings for each of them this summer.

Starting this week, about 125 employees will start working ten-hour days—Monday through Thursday instead of the regular eight-hour, five-day schedule.

"We decided this would be a proactive way to save public funds, reduce personal commutes by county staff and generally honor the county’s commitment to responsible stewardship of our resources,” according to Shafer.

Shafer says the change won't cause any reduction in maintenance services. In fact, he says, he expects just the opposite. "The longer daily shifts take full advantage of summer daylight hours, which increases productivity,” he said.

Work hours will likely switch back to the standard five-day schedule this fall when shorter daylight hours limit time available for field work, according to Shafer. "We consider this a pilot program right now.”

Private company to help County Health
provide for an additional 3,500 people

The Clark County Board of Health has entered into a two-year contract with the private health services company Sea Mar which would operate county public health services.

The plan that will give Sea Mar the lead in providing integrated primary care and behavioral health services beginning in September will increase health care access for an additional 3,500 people, according to John Wiesman, Clark County Public Health director.

Clients will also have access to a broader range of services, including clinical preventive services, acute ambulatory care, diagnostic services, disease management, care coordination and management as well as behavioral consultation services.

Park Service celebrating Fort Vancouver’s
60th anniversary with free day Thursday

There is no admission charge to U.S. Park Service’s Fort Vancouver National Historic Site Thursday, June 19. The park service is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the establishment of Fort Vancouver as a National Park Site.

An Act of Congress creating the Fort Vancouver National Monument was signed by President Harry Truman on June 19, 1948. A subsequent Act of Congress in 1961 enlarged the original site and changed its designation to that of a National Historic Site.

The historic site, gateway to northwest national parks, is at the heart of the Vancouver National Historic Reserve. For further information, call Kimm Fox-Middleton, 816-62009.
