2008 election season begins to Believe it or not, the end of the 2008 election campaigning is going to be ending in August. Two local nonpartisan races for Clark County superior court judges will be decided on the Tuesday, Aug. 19, ballots. Two veteran Clark County judges, Robert M. Harris and John Wulle, are being challenged: Harris by David W. Evans and Wulle by Ernest Edsel. In each race, whoever gets the greatest number of votes in the primary election will be considered elected to the position, according to Clark County Elections supervisor Tim Likness. Actual voting could begin this month. According to Likness, ballots will begin being mailed on July 30. There is a new twist to Washington’s primary election. Voters will not declare a political party. Candidates are not required to state their political party, although candidates may express a preference for their party, and the Republicans and Democrats can also express a preference for their candidates. According to Likness, each candidate will likely state a party preference. This primary election thus is not party affiliated, and the top two vote-getters in each contested race will advance to the general election regardless of party. Two candidates of the same party could appear in November. While the primary election will decide the fate of two superior court races, no other decisions will be made in the primary. If only two candidates face off in the primary, they will face off again in the general election in November.

River Concert remembered The Clark County Historical Museum’s Boomer Exhibit, open through April 2009, takes a close look at the baby boomer generation years, 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, from a local perspective. The list of items being included in the exhibit is growing, too, according to museum executive director Susan Tissot. For example, she says, the museum is seeking more artifacts from Clark County’s version of Woodstock, the Sky River Concert held near Washougal in 1969. Also, not yet in the exhibit is a 1960’s Easy Bake Oven or a 1960 birth control container. One of the highlights of the exhibit is a film clip of Vancouver’s First Citizen of 2007, John White, as he made national television news trying facetiously to bring back men’s leisure suits.
