Port of Vancouver’s
International Jim Fisher and Friends headline the Port of Vancouver’s International Festival, 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 27, in Esther Short Park. There is no charge for the extravaganza that highlights music, dancing and entertainment, and 22 food vendors from around the world. A partial list of the acts is as follows: Vietnamese Lion Dancers, Qicong Friends Tai Chi, Mariachi Viva Mexico, Khmer Angkor Dance Troupe, Vancouver USA Scottish Country Dancers, Tepeyac Pre-Hispanic Dance Group, Kaleinani O Ke Kukuii, Sons of Italy Bocce, and Tears of Joy Theatre. Clark College international students group is presenting a fashion show. Jorge Lizarraga, geographer and diversity faculty fellow at Washington State University Vancouver, will discuss 200 years of diversity in Vancouver and southern Washington at 12:30 p.m. from the main stage. In addition, bus tours of the Port of Vancouver are being offered every half hour between 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Participants must have photo identification and must acquire a bus pass at the festival.
Regional Transportation
Council to make The Southwest Washington Regional Transportation Council will present its recommendations for the I-5 Columbia Crossing bridge during its regular meeting at 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, in the 6th floor training room in the Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin Street. The council is also expected to amend its transportation plan to accommodate the configuration of the proposed bridge. The council will also present its preliminary findings in a study of high-capacity transit within Clark County. Public access FVTV gets boost
from The Digital Technology and Culture program at Washington State University Vancouver and the Fort Vancouver Community Television non-profit community public access television on cable channel 11 have formed a training partnership aimed at developing community leadership in public access programming and in expanding the presence of community television in Clark County. FVTV will provide professional internship opportunities to students in the DTC program, work with DTC faculty in training to help students gain project management experience in digital media. John Barber, DTC faculty, and Pete Anderson, FVTV community outreach coordinator, will co-teach a community media course in spring 2009 at WSU Vancouver. The partnership will team up DTC students with FVTV professionals to produce narrative videos, documentary films, websites, animations, podcasts, internet radio programs and other digital media for non-profit organizations in the Southwest Washington region. Barber says, "This will help raise students' awareness of, and commitment to, community involvement through ethical and professional utilizations of media, as well as build support for public access media." Other joint projects planned include fundraising events, a digital storytelling festival, and a live multi-media performance and broadcast of the Orson Welles' radio show, “The War of the Worlds.” Stream Stewards program Stream Stewards, a learn-and-serve program sponsored by Clark Public Utilities, is accepting applications for an eight-week fall course . Stream Stewards is part of Clark Public Utilities StreamTeam program. The professional-level workshop series provides lecture and hands-on experience on such topics as local hydrology, geology, botany, wildlife, water quality and native plant restoration. Graduates are required to volunteer 45 hours with StreamTeam, improving the watersheds of Salmon Creek and the East Fork of the Lewis River. No experience is necessary. Classes are held on Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The first session starts in September. There is a $10 fee to cover material costs. News brief The Building Industry Association of Clark County will present checks totaling $3 million to its 1,050 members between noon and 5 p.m. Friday, July 25, at BIA headquarters, 103 E 29th Street. The money represents returns to its members on state industrial insurance costs.
