Kyle Daggett Memorial Fund has been created in the Community Foundation to assist injured service personnel, reports Sarah Nevue, vice president of development of the Vancouver-based foundation. Daggett was just 21 last May when he was fatally injured when a rocket-propelled grenade hit his vehicle in Sadr City, Baghdad, Iraq. The memorial fund is designed to support access to other charitable organizations that provide direct assistance to U.S. service personnel. The fund is open to contributions from the public, according to Nevue. For further information, call 694-2550. The area involved is north of Highway 550, south of Minnehaha Street, between St. John’s Road and Andresen Road. An open house to gain public input and answer questions is from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, in the county operations center, 4700 NE 78th Street. Mosquitoes swarming, but most
High runoff this spring has contributed to an abundance of mosquito-breeding water in Clark County, according to the Clark County Mosquito Control District. These floodwater mosquitoes are aggressive and travel long distances, creating misery for inadequately clothed outdoor enthusiasts not wearing insect repellant, says Mosquito Control District operations manager Steve Kessler. The good news is that floodwater mosquitoes do not carry diseases, and they are 98.5 percent of the mosquito population. The other 1.5 percent are culex mosquitoes, and they are capable of transmitting West Nile Virus. The mosquito district has treated 1,000 acres of floodwater breeding areas with larvacide and is now targeting the culex variety, according to Kessler. For further information, call 397-6012.
