Murray, Baird to discuss student
loan report at Clark College

At a news conference in Clark College Tuesday, Aug. 5, U.S. Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash) and U. S. Rep. Brian Baird (D-3rd) will discuss companion legislation calling for an end of discrimination by college loan  organizations against community colleges.

Murray has already introduced a proposed Prevention Student Loan Discrimination Act in the U. S. Senate. Baird says he will follow with similar legislation in the House.

The proposed legislation would “mandate that lenders that receive federal subsidies can’t deny loans to eligible students based on the school they attend, the length of their college program or their income level.”

Pearson Air Museum comes out ahead $61,000

Rick Takach, president, Vesta Hospitality, and Amanda Kay, Arthur Murray Studios instructor, dance their way to a $61,000 payday for
Pearson Air Museum Saturday.

Rick Takach, president of Vesta Hospitality, won the ‘Dancing With The Stars’ dance contest at Pearson Air Museum Saturday as the popular dance theme helped supporters raise $61,000 for air museum operations. The first event held a year ago raised $17, 000, according to Kyle Kihs, museum director.

Competing ’stars,’ in addition to Takach, were Ali Novinger, manager, Beaches, Tatsou Ito, CEO SEH America, and Sherri McMillan, Northwest Personal Training.

Supporting and teaching Takach was Arthur Murray instructor Amanda Kay.

Vancouver’s Eric Perkins’ team
takes 5th place in Red Bull Flugtag

Eric Perkins, Vancouver, mortgage banker, Saturday led his team to fifth place in FlugTag at Tom McCall Waterfront Park, seen here piloting replica F-14 Tomcat 42 feet before falling into Willamette River.

Over 80,000 spectators Saturday crowded Tom McCall Water Front Park to watch the second edition of the Red Bull Flugtag on the Willamette River. Of 31 teams entered, The Flighty Tighties, captained by Vancouver’s Eric Perkins, captured fifth place.

Perkin’s craft, a F-14 Tomcat replica made of aluminum and parachute cloth, soared 42 feet. The winner, a Beaverton team, Team Yakima, set the meet record with a flight of 62 feet before descending into the Willamette River.

Marc Growth, also of Vancouver was a team member.

Red Bull Flugtag was last held in Portland in 2004. It is a promotion of the energy drink Red Bull. Flugtag is a German for Flight Day.

League of Women Voters
Candidates Night Tuesday

With the exception of the seven candidates for Clark County Commissioner, District 1, local candidates who are appearing on the Aug. 19 primary ballot will be interviewed by the League of Women Voters of Clark County at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, in the commissioner’s hearing room in the Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin Street.

Candidates will make opening and closing statements and will respond to questions from a panel. For further information, call (503) 281-1132.

News mistake

Last Friday we reported a straw poll taken at a Clark County commissioner candidates forum conducted by the Miller Nash Law firm incorrectly. The straw poll question of those attending was which candidates did best during the debate. The correct audience scores were as follows: Marc Boldt, 77.4 percent, Brad Lothspeich, 76 percent, Pam Brokaw, 58 percent, and Matt Swindell, 45 percent.

News brief

State Sen. Bon Benton (R-17th) reports that his campaign has raised more money than any other senatorial candidate in the state, over $188,000. “Money follows results, and that’s all there is to it. I get results for citizens every day in Olympia,” Benton said in a news release today. <> Gov. Chris Gregoire today delivered opening remarks at the annual meeting the Washington State Labor Council in the Hilton Vancouver Washington, praising the council’s Running Start for Trades Program she helped launch with the council that has created 15,000 apprenticeships, and noting that Washington is now rated by Forbes magazine as the third best state in the country in which to do business.

Calendar

There are no Vancouver City Council meetings this week. Clark County commissioners will not meet formally during the month of August.
