Joe Nichols headlines
Joe Nichols, country singer-songwriter, headlines the Clark County fair in front of the Columbian grandstand at 7:30 p.m. this evening. Seating in front of the grandstand for the Nichols concert is $18. However, grandstand seating is free with fair admission. Clark College adult literacy The Clark College Adult Literacy Program is recruiting volunteers in Vancouver and Battle Ground to tutor adults with low reading and writing skills or who are learning English as a second language. One out of eight people in Clark County can’t fill out a job application, read the newspaper or help their children learn to read, according to literacy program spokesperson Madeleine von Laue. After training, tutors work as individuals or in small tutor groups, leading conversation groups and assisting in basic skills classes. The commitment is three to four hours a week for at least six months. For further information on training classes, which will be held in September, call 992-2750. Bank of Clark County The Bank of Clark County has been selected by the Portland Business Journal as one of the fastest growing private 100 companies for the fifth consecutive year, and has been named a recipient of the journal’s Lighthouse Award for 2008. The Bank of Clark County currently has 100 employees. At the end of 2007, the bank had 79 employees and at the end of 2006 the bank had 65 full-time employees. The bank’s revenue for 2007 was up nearly 28 percent from the previous year. “While the award highlights the fact that our company has achieved consistent double digit growth and profitability, it really shows the quality and depth of our staff,” said James Taylor, the bank’s vice president and commercial lending officer. Hough Pool block The Hough Pool Block Party is all day, Saturday, Aug. 9, in the Hough School, pool and school yard, 1801 Esther Street, reports Angie Laughlin, executive director of the Hough Foundation. Events include a kid’s carnival, bake sale, barbecue, live music, garage sale, silent auction and pool party. Money raised at this annual event benefit the Hough Pool and Hough School. Tickets, which are $10, may be purchased at the door. For further information, call 696-4084. <> High school students in the Vancouver-Portland area donated blood is record numbers in the past school year, reports the American Red Cross. Students in Clark, Multnomah, Washington, Clackamas, Linn and Marion counties donated 7,9411 pints of blood, a nearly 12 percent increase from 2006-07. Clark County high schools that contributed the most blood to the Red Cross were Skyview, Washougal and CAM, Battle Ground. Calendar The League of Women Voters of Clark County is holding a candidates forum at 6:30 p.m. this evening in the commissioner’s hearing room in the Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin Street. The forum will be cablecast live by CTVT beginning at 7 p.m. <> Clark County commissioners meet in an informal session at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, in the Public Service Center. <> Tim Ellis and Jim Walker entertain during the Law Office of Terry Lee noon concert in Esther Short Park, Wednesday, Aug. 6.
