WSU Vancouver’s Amitava Chowdhury work
contributes to naming world heritage site

The work of Amitava Chowdhury, who received his doctorate in history from Washington State University Vancouver this year, has recently contributed to the naming of a world heritage site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

An archeological project that Chowdhury directed was on the site of the recently declared UNESCO World

Heritage Site, LeMorne Cultural Landscape, a rugged mountain jutting into the Indian Ocean southwest of the island of Mauritius. The site was used as a shelter by runaway slaves, called maroons during the 18th and early years of the 19th centuries.

Chowdhury, who has been teaching undergraduate courses at WSU Vancouver since 2004, did some archaeological field work at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. He will begin a new tenure-track position this fall at Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario.
