Job growth slow in region Job growth in the Portland metro region, including Cowlitz County, continues to be slow, reports Scott Bailey, regional economist for the state Department of Employment Security. On a seasonally-adjusted basis, the area lost 2,800 jobs in May and 2,700 in June before rebounding with a 600-job gain in July. Bailey. says that over the year the area has added 2,400 jobs, a 0.2 percent gain. By comparison, Clark County gained 0.8 percent and Cowlitz declined 1.6 percent. Wholesale trade, professional services, health care, and local government (including K-12 schools) have been the primary sources of new jobs for the region, and for Clark County as well. Construction, manufacturing, and finance have been the losers. Losses in banking seem to be an Oregon-side phenomenon, and Clark County alone seems to have escaped job losses in manufacturing, Bailey says. Home prices in the metro area, per the Case Shiller index, fell slightly in June after small increases in April and May, and are now 6.2 percent off the August 2007 peak, according to Bailey. Only Charlotte and Dallas, which had much smaller run-ups, have had smaller declines; Seattle prices have fallen by 7.3 percent. Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Miami have all dropped by more than 32 percent, San Diego is off 30 percent, Los Angeles, 29 percent, and San Francisco, 27 percent. Write-in doing battle Republican write-in candidate Tom Langston will appear on the general election ballot against Democrat Craig Pridemore for the 49th Legislative District Senate seat in November, according to Clark County Republican chairman Ryan Hart. Langston, who decided to run after receiving his primary election ballot, tallied more than twice the number of votes needed to qualify for the November ballot. “The number of votes Tom received is remarkable,” says Hart. "When you consider that up to 1/3 of those voting in the primary had already voted before Tom announced his write-in campaign, his numbers are quite impressive." As of county vote tally released this afternoon, Langston had 413 votes, compared to 16,824 for Pridemore.
