WSU Vancouver prof gets
prestigious book award

Daniel Jaffee, assistant professor of sociology at Washington State University Vancouver, has been awarded the 2007 C. Wright Mills Book Award for his book Brewing Justice: Fair Trade Coffee, Sustainability, and Survival.

The prestigious book award, established by the Society for the Study of Social Problems in honor of the eminent sociologist C. Wright Mills (1916-1962), has been in existence since 1964.

“My work looks at the effects of ‘free’ trade and neoliberal economic policies on the options for rural people to determine their own models for sustainable livelihoods,” says Jaffee. “I'm also a dedicated coffee drinker, and like an increasing number of people I was concerned about the social and environmental impacts of my consumption choices. I became interested in fair trade as a positive model for trading under an alternative set of rules, which has the potential to escape the most harmful effects of volatile global commodity markets.”

For more information on Brewing Justice, or to order, go to http://www.ucpress.edu/books/pages/10607.php. Jaffee may be reached by calling 546-9279, or emailing him at jaffee@wsu.edu.

Margaret Bates named Hockinson
Schools acting superintendent

Margaret Bates, who has been with the Hockinson School District since 2001 as assistant superintendent, has been appointed acting superintendent of the district, according to school board president Erik Mattson.

Bates had also been interim superintendent and this year was acting superintendent during the reassignment this summer of superintendent Delcine Mesa-Johnson.

Johnson remains with the district as superintendent on assignment, reporting to the school board president.

Former Hockinson superintendent Roger Beiber, who retired from the district in 1994 after 14 years at the post, has been retained as a special consultant.

Evergreen schools open
doors on Wednesday

Evergreen Public Schools students get an extra day of summer this year. The school district opens its doors

to students on Wednesday, Sept. 3. The school district often opens the day after Labor Day.

This will also be the first year for Kindergarten SMART START, where incoming kindergarten students attend only one day of school during the first week of classes to help teachers get to know students personally.

Evergreen kindergarten bus service will begin Monday, Sept. 8.

Most county retailers not
selling tobacco to minors

Most Clark County tobacco retailers are refusing to sell tobacco products to minors, according to Long Vue, health educator for Clark County Public Health.

Between July 1, 2007, and June 30, 2008, Clark County Public Health and the Washington State Liquor Control Board conducted compliance checks on 231 retailers. Of these—26, or about 11 percent—sold to a minor who was accompanied by a county employee. Federal law requires that community sales rate to minors be 20 percent or less.

Clark County Public Health and Washington State Liquor Control conduct random tobacco compliance checks throughout the year.

“Most illegal tobacco sales occur when clerks fail to verify that a teen is 18 years or older. Either clerks don’t ask for identification or they incorrectly calculate the teen’s age after looking at the identification,” Vue says.

Calendar
