Nominees for George Eight Clark County residents have been nominated for the General George C. Marshall Public Leadership Award, which will be presented at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, in the Marshall House. Now in its 20th year, the Marshall Public Leadership Award, honoring the legacy of General George C. Marshall, is organized by the Vancouver National Historic Reserve Trust. Nominees for the 2008 Marshall Public Leadership Award are as follows: Katherine Benson, 30, Camas, district executive for the Boy Scouts of America. A graduate of Portland State University, Benson holds a masters degree in music from PSU. She is a member of the Vancouver Rotary Club, the Vancouver Lake Crew & U.S. Rowing. In 2008 Benson was selected as a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. Cheryl Bledsoe, 34, Vancouver, emergency management manager for Clark Regional Emergency Services Agency. A graduate of Pacific Lutheran University, Bledsoe holds a masters degree in public affairs from Washington State University Vancouver. She is a 2008 graduate of Leadership Clark County. She is a member of the Citizen Emergency Response Team, the Trauma Intervention Program and the American Red Cross. Bledsoe received the Adjutant General’s Medal of Recognition for Coordination of TOPOFF 4, the nation’s premier terrorism preparedness exercise. Jessica Dahl, 24, Ridgefield, is a member of the Department of Nursing at Washington State University. Dahl is a graduate of Washington State University. She volunteers at the Free Clinic of Southwest Washington, serves on the board of the Share House and has volunteered in the Emergency Department of Legacy Salmon Creek Hospital. Alyson Lyn Galloway, 32, Vancouver, assistant director of Financial Aid and Scholarships for Washington State University Vancouver. She is a graduate of Washington State University. Galloway is a member of the Association of Student Judicial Affairs, the National Association of Financial Aid Administrators and is a regional planning chair for the College Goal Sunday Washington Task Force. Galloway is a recipient of the Vancouver Business Journal's “Accomplished Under 40” award. Phillip Haberthur, 31, Battle Ground, an attorney with Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt, also serves as a councilmember on the Battle Ground City Council. He is a graduate of Washington State University and earned his law degree from Lewis & Clark Law School. He is active in the Washington State and Clark County Bar Associations and is a member of the George and Donald Simpson Inns of Court. Haberthur also assists those who cannot afford legal services. He is a 2008 graduate of Leadership Clark County. Temple Lentz, 33, Vancouver, is executive director of the Vancouver Rotary Foundation’s Festival of Trees. She is a graduate of the University of Chicago. Temple is a member of the Vancouver Downtown Association, Nonprofit Network of SW Washington and Washington Festivals & Events Association. In 2007 she received the gold award from the Washington Festival & Events Association for Community Outreach Excellence and Promotional Campaign Excellence. She is a participant in the 2008-09 class of Leadership Clark County. Justin Myers, 33, Vancouver, assistant vice president of the Retail Banking Division for West Coast Bank. He is a graduate of Portland State University and earned a masters degree in business administration in finance from Marylhurst University. Myers serves on the board of the Evergreen Habitat for Humanity and assisted with Junior Achievement and the Home Ownership Center. He founded and led West Coast Bank’s first teddy bear drive to benefit two local hospitals and two nonprofit organizations.
Brian Stewart, 33, Vancouver,
training officer for Clark County Fire & Rescue. He is a graduate of
Cogswell College. Stewart serves as president of the board of directors
for the North County Community Food Bank. He is a member of the Lewis
River Rotary Club and is a peer reviewer for MERLOT (Multimedia
Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching). In 2007 Stewart
received the Chabot College Distinguished Adjunct Faculty award and in
2005 was named Firefighter and Paramedic of the Year in San Francisco. Voter registration deadline looming The deadline for submitting online or mail-in voter registration forms for the Tuesday, Nov. 4, presidential election is Saturday, Oct. 4, reports county Elections Department supervisor Tim Likness. Registration in person at the Elections Office will be available until October 20, but after October 4 this option is only available to citizens not currently registered anywhere in the state of Washington.For information on accessible voting options, visit www.clarkvotes.org or call the Elections Office at 397-2345.
Mt. Hood Ski Patrol
Mt. Hood The region's largest ski and snowboard swap, The Mt. Hood Snowsport Swap, opens the weekend of October 11 in West Linn High School, reports Brian Barker, spokesperson for the Mt Hood Ski Patrol. The swap benefits the West Linn High School Snowboard Team and the Mount Hood Ski Patrol.According to Barker: "The swap is Oregon's best winter sports equipment and clothing event, featuring thousands of new and used winter sports items being sold by both individuals and area sports stores. Equipment, clothing and accessories for all winter sports are available, including Nordic and alpine skiing & snowboarding. Sports retailers around the northwest will be there to sell thousands of new and demonstration equipment items at incredible swap prices." Vancouver Symphony
Orchestra The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra will host its 15th Annual Young Artists Competition in 2009. Local student instrumentalists will compete for a scholarship and chances to perform with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra on Saturday and Sunday, April 18 and 19, 2009, in the Skyview High School Concert Hall. Competition is open to all students, 18 and under on January 1, 2009, in three categories: strings, brass/woodwinds/percussion, and piano. Contestants must be currently studying with a music teacher and must reside within a 35-mile radius of Vancouver, Washington. Applications must be made before Jan. 5, 2009. Patron tour will
showcase Family-community resource centers at Fruit Valley and Washington Elementary Schools will be on display during an October Vancouver School District patron tour led by superintendent Steven Webb. Family-community resource centers are planned for other elementary schools as well, according to Webb. The patron tour is from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Friday, Oct. 10. Reservations are required.
