City approves neighborhood grants The City of Vancouver has approved funding for eight Neighborhood Action Plan (NAP) Grant projects totaling $34,532.72 and six neighborhood matching grant projects totaling $4,284.53. The City Council makes grant funds available to recognized neighborhood associations to help implement projects included in neighborhood action plans. The matching grants require that the association provide funds or volunteer labor toward the project to match the amount granted by the City. Grants are awarded annually. The grant cycle begins with a pre-application that is due by March 31 each year.
WSU Vancouver adds three to faculty As part of continuing growth plans, Washington State University Vancouver has added three new faculty members this fall. Cory Bolkan, bolkan@vancouver.wsu.edu, 360-546-9336, assistant professor of gerontology in the Department of Human Development, previously with University of Washington as research associate for the Department of Health Services and the School of Public Health and Community Medicine. Bolkan's research interests are in exploring psychosocial aspects of late life depression, such as the role that perceptions, personality or goals and social support relate to health care and depressive symptoms in older adults, generally focusing on mental health and aging. Cynthia Cooper, cdcooper@vancouver.wsu.edu, 360-546-9342, assistant professor of molecular genetics in science programs. She was most recently from University of Washington, Department of Biological Structure. Cooper's research interest is cell biology and genetics of zebrafish pigment cell development and function, providing insight for understanding disorders specific to these cells, including melanoma and vitiligo. Lorrie Dawson, ljdawson@vancouver.wsu.edu, 360-546-9350 assistant professor in nursing, previously the assistant dean and regional academic director of nursing programs for the Tri-Cities and Walla Walla WSU campuses. Dawson's research interests are the use of symptom interpretation in practice, incorporating aspects of cultural competence into nurse practitioner prescribing practices, and in the changes in symptom severity over time in community acquired pneumonia patients. Boyd joins Southwest’s board of directors Richard (Dick) Boyd has been appointed to the Board of Directors of Southwest Washington Medical Center and Southwest Washington Health System, parent company of the Medical Center. The governing board is consists of 15 members who all give their time freely to guide the Medical Center, which is celebrating its 150th year of service in this community. Boyd is Co-CEO and President of Boyd Coffee Company. His primary areas of focus include General Management, Corporate Planning/Development, and Corporate Culture. A longtime local businessman and recipient of numerous awards from the Washington, Oregon and California Restaurant Associations, Boyd has also served on advisory boards for several community and business organizations, including the Salvation Army, the Cascade Employers Association, and Associated Oregon Industries. Boyd’s accomplishments extend beyond the business community. He is a graduate of the University of Oregon and has earned a place in the University’s Athletic Hall of Fame (inducted in 2005) for his success as a competitive swimmer. He was also named to the NCAA All-American swim team in 1963, 1964, and 1965. Calendar “Successful Exit Strategies: Maximizing the Value of Your Business…Preserving Your Wealth” seminar will be held on Thursday, October 16, 7:30-10:30 a.m. in downtown Portland. The seminar is designed for business owners and professional service providers to help prepare companies for growth and sale. Presenters will be Jeff Kraai, president of Exit Strategies and Keith Cupp, executive coach with Executive Mentors and Trainers. Cost is $249 per person. A workbook and breakfast are included.
