Vancouver Symphony presents Ryu Goto
soloing in Paganini's First Violin Concerto

Twenty-year-old violinist Ryu Goto headlines the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra concerts conducted by artistic director Salvador Brotons this weekend in the concert hall at Skyview High School.

Goto will play Niccolo Paganini"s Concerto No. 1 for Violin and Orchestra in D Major, Opus 6.

The orchestra also presents the overture to Rossini's Barber of Seville, selections from Faure's incidental music to Maeterlinck's Pelleas et Melisande, and Respighi's Pines of Rome.

Born in New York in 1988, Goto studied with Yoko Gilbert, Victor Danchenko and Cho-Liang Lin. He is currently a student at Harvard University.

He made his concert debut at the age of seven playing all three movements of Paganini Violin Concerto No.1 at the Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo, Japan. Since then, he has appeared as a soloist with a number of international orchestras, including Dallas and Washington National Symphonies in the United States, London Philharmonic, Philharmonia Orchestra, Toscanini Symphonica (Italy), Bamberg Symphony Orchestra and Orpheus Chamber Orchestra

Goto plays a 1715 Stradivari violin known both as the 'Ex-Pierre Rode' and the 'Duke of Cambridge', on loan from the NPO "Yellow Angel."
Along with his concert engagements, Ryu enjoys playing the guitar and has a black belt in karate.

Vancouver Symphony Orchestra performances are at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, and 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, in the concert hall at Skyview High School, 1300 NW 139th Street. Each performance is preceded by an hour-long discussion of the music, composers and artists.

Tickets range from $40 for reserved seating, $28 for general admission, $23 for seniors and $7 for students. Tickets may be bought at the door, River City Music, Music World and Beacocks Music Company. For further information, call 735-7278.
