Vancouver’s Second Annual Girlfriends Half Marathon a huge success The 2nd Annual Girlfriends’ Half-Marathon on Sun., October 19, was a huge success helping to raise more than $20,000 for the Susan G Komen for the Cure to help with the treatment and cure of breast cancer. Last year’s event had 400 participants. This year’s race was capped at 1,000 participants and sold out months before the event. “We had more than 1,000 runners and walkers from over 26 states, Canada and even Scotland complete the 13.1 mile event. The response has been overwhelming with avid running and walking event enthusiasts saying this was the best event they had ever participated in,” said Sherri McMillan, event director and owner with her husband Alex of Northwest Personal Training & Fitness Education in Vancouver. What made the difference? “The incredible citizens of Vancouver who volunteered their time to help out including local firefighters, officer reserves and paramedics,” said McMillan. “I was told that our 200-plus volunteers were the best in the world. I feel so proud to live in Vancouver, Washington.” The scenic and fast course took runners through downtown, around Ester Short Park, through the Vancouver Farmer’s Market, along the Columbia River waterfront, through Marine Park, over the Confluence Bridge, by Pearson Airport, through Fort Vancouver, and along Officer’s Row. McMillan also credited the success to the local businesses that supported the event. “Even in tough economic times,” McMillan said, “Vancouver businesses rally around an important cause” “Our event would never have been as successful as it was if it wasn’t for the City of Vancouver, and local business and volunteer community support. Our community always seems to pull together! Mayor Royce Pollard even came down on race day for a welcome address and to do the final countdown to the start,” McMillan said. Race winners
Kim Lester and
Cyndee Hein, both of Camas, but
who had never met prior to the event, finished in 1:29:32 (a 6:50 minute
mile pace) in perfect “Girlfriends” style: holding hands while racing
across the finish line.
