District, Union reach tentative agreement The Camas School District and the Public School Employees (PSE) group announced they have reached a tentative collective bargaining agreement following months of negotiations. Following a declaration of impasse, a state mediator was brought into the process in early October. PSE will bring the agreement to its membership for ratification on November 5. If ratified by the PSE membership, the agreement will be brought to the school board for approval on November 10. PSE employees represent most
classified, non-teaching staff members in the district. City, business cooperation will "Make A Difference" More than 500 volunteers are expected tomorrow morning in Vancouver’s Leverich Park. The occasion? Free food. Actually, the occasion is teamwork and community pride. Volunteers organized as part of the City of Vancouver’s celebration of Make A Difference Day through the Vancouver Watersheds Council, The Greenway Team (of the City of Vancouver, and the Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation) will be at the park to plant over 5,000 trees, but there will be plenty of free food. That’s because Nutter Corporation and MacKay & Sposito as well as Frito-Lay and Corwin Beverage are joining together to feed the masses in the spirit of community volunteerism — and making a difference. Mount St. Helens climbing self-permit system begins November 1 Beginning Sat., November 1, Mount St. Helens climbers will need to obtain a climbing permit at the Climber’s Register at the Lone Fir Resort, in Cougar, Washington. Officials said climbers need to be prepared for rapidly changing fall and winter weather conditions and increasing snow and ice on the climbing route. “It’s important that people come prepared with the 10-essentials including compass, map, extra warm clothing and rain gear,” said Peter Frenzen, Monument Scientist. “When fog or blowing snow reduces visibility it’s good to have an experienced climber along to lead folks back to the trailhead. As wind and snow begin to rebuild the overhanging snow cornices on the crater rim it’s also important to carefully assess how close to go and where it’s safe to look into the crater,” Frenzen added. During the winter climbing
season (November 1 through March 31) climbing permits are required and
are available free-of-charge by self-registration. Winter climbers need
to be prepared for potentially extreme winter Information on potential hazards and changing conditions is available on the Mount St. Helens Climbing webpage at http://www.fs.fed.us/gpnf/recreation/mount-st-helens/index.shtml. Climbing Fees begin April 1, 2009 and use limits of 100 climbers per day are in effect from May 15 through October 31. Permits will be sold online for the April 1 through October 31 climbing permit season starting February 1, 2009. Information about the climbing permit system is available online at http://www.fs.fed.us/gpnf/recreation/mount-st-helens/permit-system.shtml University of Portland named “Best Nursing School for Men” The University of Portland today was named the nation's "Best Nursing School for Men" by the American Assembly for Men in Nursing.
