Correction: Waterfront design open house November 5 at 6:30 p.m.

Gramor Development, Inc / Columbia Waterfront LLC and the City of Vancouver invite the public to attend an Open House from 6:30-8 p.m. on Wed., Nov. 5, to preview initial design concepts for the Waterfront Project Parks and Open Space Network. The Open House will be at the Water Resources Education Center 4600 SE Columbia Way.

The developer and its design team, city staff and CRT members will be available to review illustrations of the proposed park concept, sketches, park programming ideas and park design principles.  There will be no formal presentation, but a series of presentation boards will be available for viewing.  Organizers said concepts are preliminary but reflect the input from the CRT as well as the various city downtown development planning documents developed over the last several years.

The Community Resource Team (CRT) has recently concluded a series of three meetings.  This past September, a group of nearly 30 community stakeholders were invited to provide input regarding the parks and open space network of the Vancouver Waterfront Development project.

Street closures will result in Veteran’s Day Parade re-route

Due to road construction on Main Street, the 22nd annual Celebrate Freedom Veterans Day Parade on Saturday, November 8 will have a slight change to the parade route. As usual, the parade begins at the corner of East Reserve Street and Evergreen Boulevard and proceeds west along Officers Row toward downtown Vancouver. The altered route takes place after the parade crosses I-5 along Evergreen.  The parade will turn south onto “C” Street, follow “C” for two blocks to Regal City Center 12 Cinema, then turn west onto Eighth Street.  The parade resumes the normal route travelling east on Eighth Street and ends at Esther Short Park.

Street closures will occur starting at 8 a.m. in the parade lineup areas along Evergreen Boulevard and at 10:30 a.m. along the parade route. The parade begins at 11 a.m. with the firing of the Howitzer cannons on the Parade Ground at the Historic Reserve. The parade will take place rain or shine. Participants and parade goers should be prepared for all weather conditions.

C-Tran bus routes in downtown Vancouver also will be changed due to the parade. For details about bus route changes, please call C-Tran’s passenger service line at 360-695-0123 or visit their Web site at www.C-Tran.com/.

An Historic Reserve Reveille for Our Veterans is the theme of this year’s parade. This Department of Defense sanctioned annual parade is organized by The Vancouver National Historic Reserve Trust as one of the Celebrate Freedom programs.

The parade’s reviewing officer is retired Rear Admiral Mark Feichtinger. His personal awards include the Legion of Merit, the Navy Meritorious Service Medal (five awards), the Navy Commendation Medal (two awards), and Navy Achievement Medal.  As reviewing officer, he will salute participants from the reviewing stand located on the front lawn of the Marshall House, 1301 Officers Row.  Citizens are encouraged to gather near the Marshall House for a 10:00 a.m. ceremony, which will include comments from Rear Admiral Feichtinger and other local officials followed by the national anthem.

The Grand Marshal for this year’s parade is Washington State Lt. Governor Brad Owen.  He has held the office of the Lt. Governor for 12 years and is the longest currently serving Lt. Governor in the nation. The Wells Fargo stage coach will transport the Grand Marshal along the parade route.

Community Pride Design awards to be held November 10

The thirteenth annual Community Pride Design Awards ceremony is scheduled for Monday, November 10. Nine projects will be honored for their innovative approaches to architectural design, community and environmental enhancement, public facilities, and commercial development. Four honorable mentions will also be presented.

The free public event will be held in the Public Service Center, sixth-floor hearing room, 1300 Franklin St., Vancouver. Refreshments begin at 2:30 p.m. followed by the ceremony at 3 p.m.

The Community Pride Design Awards were established in 1996 by various public and private organizations

This program honors developers, builders, and the community for helping to make Clark County a great place to live and work.  More information is available at www.clark.wa.gov/commdev/prideawardsn.html.

Transportation officials: fast cars, pedestrians & dark streets a dangerous combination

With shorter days increasing the risk of injury due to dark streets, the Washington State Department of Transportation reminds motorists and pedestrians to pay extra attention to pedestrian safety. November 2 marks the end of Daylight Savings Time and begins the most difficult time of year for drivers to see walkers and bikers. In fact, transportation officials said of the 67 pedestrian fatalities that occurred between February 1, 2007 and January 30 2008, almost half (33) occurred between October and January.

The dark, rainy days of fall and winter reduce a driver’s ability to see, and walkers and bicyclists should take extra efforts to become more visible.

Excessive speed and visibility are the most critical factors, said WSDOT officials. The following websites offer additional safety information: WSDOT Pedestrian Safety Tips—http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/Walk/Safety_Tips.htm. WSDOT Bicycle Safety Tips—http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/bike/Safety_Tips.htm
