Loaves & Fishes sees 15% increase in meals served

The number of senior citizens dining each weekday at Loaves & Fishes throughout the metro area has increased by an average of 15 % since November 1, 2007.

Clark County’s seven meal sites increased by 15%.

“The dramatic increase in the number of senior meals served in our dining room is an indicator of the economic climate,” said Joan Smith, Loaves & Fishes Centers executive director. “We plan for growth of about 6% annually, but the numbers over the past few months have been staggering.”

Loaves & Fishes receives about two-thirds of its annual operating budget from donations. The agency spends 87% of its annual budget on food and services.

The agency welcomes monetary donations and volunteers. Go to www.loavesandfishesonline.org or call 503-736-6325 for more information.

Clark county third graders receive special gift
Columbia Credit Union sponsors Rotary dictionary project

Columbia Credit Union and the Clark County Rotary joined together to provide dictionaries to third graders in all Clark County school districts for the third annual Clark County Rotary Dictionary Donation project.

This year’s project is in honor of the 250th anniversary of Noah Webster’s birth, the founding father of the modern dictionary.

More than 5,000 dictionaries complete with book plates and bookmarks are being distributed. Columbia Credit Union underwrote the project by funding the purchase of the dictionaries and providing name plates and bookmarks. Columbia staff are also assisting Rotary volunteers with dictionary preparation and distribution to the schools.

“Literacy is one of the major areas of emphasis for Rotary International and the Rotary Clubs of Clark County,” said Dennis Wickham, MD, Rotary District governor. “We are pleased and proud to work with Columbia Credit Union to provide dictionaries to Clark County third graders.”
